There is no better, more trusted and relied upon friend, than a dog who has been with and around you for a number of years. They form a protective bond tat exists down to their or your death. They will not betray you, lie to you or tell a lie about you. When you look into their eyes you will always see the truth reflected there as they are not capable of deception. I feel your pain, but ending your faithful companion's pain and suffering is the right thing to do.

Enjoyed your poem as I've had the same issues with my dogs.
Notes - the contest requires a consistent rhyme scheme. The majority of your poem is in the aa,bb, rhyme scheme. My suggestion would be to first, remove the first line, Ode to Dinky, as it is already in the title and the next line doesn't rhyme with 'dinky'. Then, put lines 3 and 4 together - You have pooped and also peed - to rhyme with - To stay outside, there is no need. The rest of the poem follows the aa,bb rhyme scheme.
I always go outside in bad weather with my dog to make sure he does his business. He lets me know when he wants to go outside, even if it's 3 am and a blizzard is happening.
Sorry about your loss. Hope you get another dog.
Good luck in the contest.
Cheers ... ;o)

My wife kept telling Dinky you have to be immortal. We had to put our cat of 15 years, Moe, down last week. Life is certainly different without them. I appreciate you reading and reviewing my work.

Oh! I'm sorry to hear that.
I do understand your wife. I feel the same way.
Take care.

Hi Earl Corp, this is a cute poem and a great entry to the contest. Reading your author notes makes your conversation with Dinky so real. Poor dog - our dog Blodwen had a stroke and that is what took her. That was years ago - warm regards to you. Dorothy - Good luck in the contest.

The cheerful and light-hearted nature of your poem contrasts with the sad news in your notes. How attached we become to our pets, especially those who are loyal companions over many years. Last year we had to say goodbye to three. Now we have a new pup who entertains us and keeps us young, but we will never forget the others who stole our hearts.

How sad it is to lose such a beloved friend. Dogs instinctively know when we are hurting and care for us as much as we bare for them. Best wishes in the contest, and my condolences on the loss of Dinky, my friend~Debbie

Dear Earl,
Your outstanding poem about Dinky is so loving and real. I admire your concise and clear story for all of us to read. For Dinky to live for 17 years let us know how much love and care you have given. Excellent writing.
My best,
Deborah

"Ode to Dinky", is an extremely well-written and entertaining piece. Dinky, in no time at all won my heart! This is definitely a six. I look forward to reading this talented poet's work again, in the near future.

Earl Corp,
Like Dinky, none of us are immortal. Hairy or furry, they play a huge part in our life.
Take care and God bless,
the Duchess !(-_-)!

I'm sorry Earl - I know how hard this is. I had a Golden Retriever for 16 years and I had to put him down and it was the hardest thing I ever did in my entire life. I am so sorry and it pains me to even think about you losing this friend and companion. I thought I might have read this poem before and now I see why you posted maybe again. I haven't replaced my doggie because it was so hard on me. I hope you have strength and your loved ones to get through the next part. Fonda
