This sonnet, Fade to Black, has the correct framing and speaks of freedom chosen after knowing the trap of impulsive commitment to a will-killing relationship.

Great sonnet entry with a very good selection of rhyming words. Quite creative. Nice picture that adds to your poem. Best of luck with your writing piece.

Sorry I don't have a sixer for ya. This is deep. A narrow but clean break from an undeserving love which formerly held you captive, it seems. At least in this poem, you have escaped to a better love, or, chance for love...without regret.
All my best,
Sal :+)

Thanks so much, Sal. Yes, the primary idea was a hurtful relationship, but I was hoping on another level it could apply to all the bright, shiny things which beguile us. Most grateful, Craig

Love the clever allusion to Metallica's Fade to Black. Although that might not have been your intention it works for me.

The motion of your perfectly rhymed and metred sonnet sets up the cadence of rushing to failure perfectly. That moth's speed to certain death does seem almost hypnotic and it could be defended that under the influence of pheromones one isn't in fact in their right mind.

Of course as one ages the sense of smell declines, so one could it attribute to newly arrived sensibility to late-arrived wisdom, or the inability to smell. lol

Superb sonnet and I wish you great luck with the Contest Committee.

Gloria

I went through a lot of really daft possibilities before selecting the name, Gloria. Despite appearances, that's not where the name came from, although with your assistance, I can now name exactly one Metallica song. Intrigued, I Googled the lyrics to that song, and yes, I think it fits quite well :) I think I just knew the phrase from the old screenwriting term. Thanks so much for the wonderful rating, good wishes and the lovely comments. Cheers, Craig

You didn't strike as much of a heavy metal fan. Metallica is one my favourites in the genre and yep fade to black is most certainly a screenwriting term. Best of luck with the committee.

This original and well written sonnet is an excellent read. The metaphor is cleverly hidden in this poetic rendering. Well done. The image is perfect for this poem. Spiders are a species to be studied and learned from as we also weave webs and tantalize.
Have a great evening.

Hi Craig, this is a lovely sonnet with a somewhat sinister outlook. Yes, far to often do we get ensnared by the light only to discover that it is our own demise. Great entry for the contest. All the best. Ulla:))

Yes, the light at the end of the tunnel is not always what it appears, Ulla. Thanks so much for the kind review and good wishes. Craig

My pal the trivia nut, says a moth guides off the moon. If it mistakes a Terran source for Luna, it will fly in a circle that may spiral so tight...crispy critter. Iambic pentameter, abab, and a no longer...Shakespearean mode...excellent

Thanks so much for the great comments, and the nature lesson. I did not know that about moths. Most grateful, Craig

Now that is a really powerful sonnet, Craig -- even though the basis is kinda 'dark' in its own way, I absolutely love the aura and the vision you've created with your excellent word choices! :) ;) Yes, flee! fly, moth, fly! :) :) A perfect offering for the contest -- I look forward to seeing how it fares! :) Thanx for sharing! :) Yvette
