Ashes in the Wind

Contains 20 syllables, so the poem meets the prompt. A lot of truth revealed in the comment "how precarious is mankind's foothold". Man believes he is the center of the universe, however, that could all change in a moment's notice. "Ashes in the wind" describes precisely what mankind really is and how fleetingly it can all disappear. Well written poem.

Gasp. This is how I felt reading this....a fleeting gasp of shock and then it was gone...and so I came back to look again...and sure enough you'd captured life on the head of a pin. Having recently received my Ash Wednesday cross this stirred my soul and made me recommit to making every second count....

I count twenty syllables, here, and am able to fathom the message, so you should be in the running for a "Short Poem" contest. The prompt needs to be more specific,
Most two/four/twos are "short"....excellent post.

A very well-written short poem with exactly twenty syllables as required. We don't always realize how precious our lives are and we often waste many chances to make the best of life.

Beautiful work, your words are very profound, and makes one contemplative of the future. Most people are aware of dust to dust, or from dust you arose and to dust you must return. I love how you captured that thought and incorporated it.

I admired your succinct description of the world we inhabit. The fleeting "ashes in the wind" is a very appropriate metaphor, and your picture selection with the precarious nest is very reinforcing. Cheers and best wishes in the competition- Joan

Hi Diane, very nice description and imagery in this short poem. Excellent syllable count. We do never know how long we have in this life, so we shouldn't take it for granted.

Hello KT, a profound and thought provoking write; succinct, yet, speaks volumes; the last line is a beaut! Wonder, if this is a picture inspired verse? Good luck to you my friend.

Hello ameen786,
Thank you for your thoughtful and complimentary review.
I had been searching for artwork for a haiku that I have written, but not yet posted, when I came across the artwork that I have attached to this poem.
When I realized that the perching bird was next to his mate who was impaled upon the hawthorne branch - the fragility of life really struck me. One thing led to another and "Ashes in the Wind" came to be.
So pleased you enjoyed...

I liked this very much, and your words ring true...life could be snatched away from one or all of us at anytime. We need to seize the day and live each one as if it were our last. Thanks for sharing and good luck in the contest.
