Hello, Sandra, :)
Good chapter. It was good to see Joe have the upper hand for the time being. Hope Gwendolyn thinks of something.
I have a suggestion:
'What friend? You ain't got no friend--we could see em if you did. I be reck'nin' this ones got mashed spuds fer brains. What say you, Jake?' Tod tried to match his mates show of bravado (period and a new paragraph?), but I could see both of them were remembering the stones I threw at them in the lane, and their laughter sounded rather strained.
Looking forward to the next.

I'm relieved that Joe, although bloodied and all, is still alive. I'd feared for his life.
And as I raced through the reading - your pace in the story is unbeatable, Sandra - I couldn't help but breathe out a sigh of relief at the description in the last paragraph:
>> Sir John stared open-mouthed when he saw the cap float through the air, seemingly on its own. Shock filled his eyes as he stepped back, knocking into the bench the oil lamp was standing on. The subsequent explosion of shattered glass when it crashed to the floor, resulted in the flame hungrily licking at the pile of yellowed paper beside where it landed....<<
Priceless!
I can't wait for the next racy chapter.
Warmest regards,
Aki
