Not a circle many who saw it would dare venture into I reckon friend, I know I wouldn't : ) I enjoyed the alliteration, the visuals and the rhyme of your creative poem... very nice!

Many thanks for your kind words about the alliteration and rhyme, Hitcher. Most affirming and appreciated. The folklore association with fairies and magic might make one hesitate a bit, though I do remember as a child taking a deep breath and jumping into one, just to see if it was true. Fortunately, the fairies must have been asleep at the time! Best wishes, Tony

I always remember an episode of the X files back in the day were Mulder and steps into a mushroom circle and unsettles the spores he is knocked unconscious and has nightmareish dreams while slowly being devoured

I must have missed that episode!

I don't think I'm kidding myself when I say I think I have at least an average vocabulary, but I often find myself diving for the dictionary when I read one of your poems. Your grasp of language is quite amazing.

I love the magical, medieval feel of this. That the rhyme and pentameter are perfect goes without saying. Great job :)

G'day Tony.

How are things back home in Aus, mate? (Mushrooms reminded me lol.)

As always you have come up with a brilliant piece of poetry. Your grasp of English, and adding it to your great poetic ability always inspire me, while entertaining me.

A very good work, cobber.

Cheers Fez

Many thanks for your kind words, Fez. Most affirming and appreciated. It's been pissing down with rain here for the past week in and around Adelaide, causing the Onkaparinga River to rise to dangerous levels and there's been some local flooding. Good to see the thirsty land recovering though and the dams full again. Best wishes, Tony

Your poem is so exemplary that even though I read it on Saturday morning, I reviewed it Saturday night so I could award it a six star review.

I was first struck by the density and the nuance of your language. It is vivid, emotional. and magical as you describe a ring of mushrooms as being a faerie circle. You sound a cautionary note as you warn the reader or listener:

Beware all those who step within this ring,
Their dormancy of dreams undone by dance,
For faerie folk weave magic here, to sing
Their souls adrift, to captivate - entrance.

You display a superb array of literary devices like alliteration:

Let lambent leaves of oak shake off the shade,
Let wind and withy spindles spin and sway,

Your poem also spoke to my knowledge and imagination of Irish folklore regarding faerie folk. It helps that I am 6% Irish.

This is highly polished and creative poetic writing. Thank you for enchanting.

Many thanks, Andre, for your kind words about the use of language and the alliteration in this and for delaying your review toaward six stars. Most affirming and appreciated. 6% Irish! I had a maternal great-grandmother who was Irish, so that puts us in the same ballpark! Best wishes, Tony

I read this earlier but had to wait until I got my sixes. Beautiful way to describe the magical quality of the ring of mushrooms that just appear in the morning. Perfect crafting in your meter, rhyme scheme and full of alliteration!

Many thanks, Helen, for your comments about the alliteration and rhyme scheme, and the six stars. How kind of you to reserve them for me! Most affirming and appreciated. I think that several different kinds of fungi grow in rings, some edible and some not so. I imagine that eating them is more dangerous than stepping inside the circle! Best wishes, Tony

I agree, Tony. Too many people have gotten sick or even died from eating mushrooms in the wild. Always enjoy your poems. Have a great week!

Love, love, love, love, love!!

My inner child crept shyly out as I read this poem, and dances a fairy dance ... dreaming of forest glens awash in moonlight. Thank you for this moment of pure delight. We find so few moments of innocent joy, thank for creating one!

I love the use of repeated beginning sounds (can't think, at the moment what they are called!) and I love the dance like quality of this piece. As I was reading it, I did not want it to end ... so I read it again ... and again. Perchance I am "trapped by fey!" I certainly am entranced by your lovely little poem.

You have a new fan~

Blessings, Analie

Wonderful whimsy with an underlay of decay. Your poetry is always so beautifully crafted with the most wonderful evocative words. Life's revelries echo for such a short time. (Maybe not if they are woven into such a beautiful poem.)

What a perfect fairy ring that is in your mushroom circle picture, Tony. I wonder why they grow like that. The mushrooms I picked as a child seemed to grow at random. I enjoyed your poem so much as usual with your clever rhyming words that the common man like me does not think of! Now I have a word or 2 to look up, thank you for that, Giddy
