Awww, this is sad. I feel so bad for the people just left there all alone. I don't know if I could work there and have to see it all the time too sad to me. Great poem!

Thanks, Cheryl. It is a sad subject and I think one has to have a certain gift to be able to work with these precious people.

Way too many people in nursing homes are forgotten or their family lives to far away or too busy to visit. It's horrible. I have tried to set something up so my class could visit and read to them, but it's keeps getting blocked. Thank you for sharing your wonderful poem and good luck.

Your poem really touched my heart and I certainly can relate to your words. My mother lost both of her legs, amputated just above both knees. It was due to complications of diabetes. We didn't have any other choice except to admit her into a nursing home. She needed constant medical care. It broke our hearts, but there was no other choice. But, thank God, she didn't become a wilted flower. She was very active and had many visitors until she died at the age of 90. Your poem will serve as an educational piece to those readers that might be facing this same decision. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your concern for those living their final days in nursing homes. Take care and good luck in the contest. Bill

Thank you for your high rating and comments and yes, nursing homes are needed just like you said, but it makes do much difference when there is family support and the attitude of their loved one. Sounds like your mother stayed positive even in her adversity...a lesson for us as well. :-)

I drove forty miles round trip five days a week to keep the situation you
speak of from happening to my mother. I guess I failed...it's hard to tell.
Excellently done, but I don't like it...

Thank you for your review and comments. Dont see why you think you failed. Sounds like you were there for her.
It's a hard topic...so many have no one to check on them.

Hi, Karen
= Great poem depicting the woes of one left in a nursing home, while life goes on all around them.
= It's true about the many stories from these people. I'm sure some are most heartbreaking.
= Kids just don't have time. They don't stop to think that Mom/Dad was always there for them when were growing up--yet, they can't be bothered them when the shoe is on the other foot.
= The artwork is a perfect depiction of a forgotten soul.
= Excellent entry in the contest. Good Luck!

Thanks, Jackie...kind of a downer but a topic that needs addressing. Most of their stories are very interesting...historical stuff and how they met their hubby. They love to share.

There are far more of these in nursing homes that anyone would be willing to admit. I have seen it too having worked in a nursing home years ago. Patricia

Thanks, Patricia. I am sure you did see plenty but I bet you were a caring staff member too.

This is so sad and it eats my donkey that people, any family puts a loved one in a nursing home. One may as well sentence innocence to prison. In foreign lands they don't do that and I pat them on the back for it too. This is so the truth, wow. When does this country get back to taking care of their own family, seriously????? It's great.

Thanks, Angie, for your high rating and comments. Nursing homes serve a purpose sometimes but we definitely could learn some other options .

This is a poignant read, having been to a few places where the older people seem resigned to accept loneliness it's heartbreaking to see. This is an excellent free verse poem, best wishes for the contest.
Bless you

Excellent. This is beautiful and oh so sad. It is so often true of old people. They sit in nursing homes waiting to die. My aunt lived to be 103. She outlived two husbands and had only one adopted child who never came to see her. We, her nieces and nephews, went to see her but it wasn't the same for her. She often said she was ready to die and wondered why it was taking so long. Very sad.

Yes...it is sad to see them reach that point where they are ready to give up. But I am sure your visits were a blessing for her.

Hi, Karen.
What a powerful poem that sheds such truth on many of the elderly. I too have seen sad situations like you've described in your poem. I read your note. Good for you to give your time, listen to those who are so lonely, offering kindness and friendship.
Bye

Thanks, Rosalyne. A hard topic but one we need to think about. I get much more than I give when I go visit. :-)
