What a horrible, sick, disgusting practice. Half the world is crazy, and it's bleeding over onto the other half. There is no stopping this cancer, since sane people let it happen. This damn PC poison taht says "don't hurt Muslim's feelings" will be the end of us all.

Thanks for resonating with the message of the poem and for the five stars too. My friend, I am not talking of any religion here, it is about female genitalia mutilation, irrespective of religion. I have respect for all faiths but I cannot accept women abuse.

This is a stark and disturbing topic embraced in your tighly written free verse. The poor girls are scarred by superstitious beliefs with no redress or allowance for choice. I'm glad you wrote to highlight this indignity.

By posting my comments and opinions on this one, I feel like a meddler. My take is that this is themed on the line about women's freedom of choice.

The title straddles both sides of the issue. "Condemn us not" for partaking of the "apple." How were we to know of the consequences? What would have been the outcome of refusal?

About this right to reject genital mutation, do the girls have choice against it? Background in culture and practice, even the perpetrators wouldn't know the difference. The victims being still not of "legal" age as we conventionally know it, can only suffer through.

I've heard about this horrible ritual and truly don't understand how a society could implement such a thing, AND keep it going! Absolutely I applaud your message here Nassus!

To nassus1957,
An alarming concern that the government officials should we made aware of. As the torture they are inducing to these young adolescents is cutting them to the core of their womanhood---and therefore never knowing what the true nature of a woman's worth is.

Yes, this is an appalling custom and hopefully one that will die out sooner rather than later as the true horror of it is opened up to global awareness.

This is so very, very shocking, and it's just difficult to believe that this ritual is still being practiced today! How can it be changed? Can't anyone do anything to stop this? I was surprised to read that the proverbial apple is symbolical of free will. What free will????? What a great write and thanks for posting this. . .Sharon

This practice of genital mutilation has disgusted me for many years. It blows my mind to think that there are still people in the world so primitive as to wilfully carry out these practices on their own daughters. Women of the future in these countries must be educated and slowly the practice will change. I fear a long time will pass before it is wiped out. Your sad poem is a cry in the wilderness to which I add my voice, Giddy
