This was a beautiful poem and I feel like I visited Paris myself? I have never been there though I would love that above all things. I know so much about the city, and it is the most romantic place in the world! Thank you for the very helpful author's notes and your lovely tour of this City of Light.

yeltel, so glad you took the trip with me! It's beauty is in it's architecture, arts, lifestyle, food, atmosphere and the list goes on. And steeped in history! Thank you for your great review and lovely compliments! :-)) Sue

Your poem makes me wishful that I could see that beautiful place. Like you I'm sitting here trying not to freeze. I love the French language you add; it gives the poem that touch of France. I can say that even though I can read a word of of it.

You know what, I've never been there, but I have a photo of the Champs Elysees in my dining room, and I treasure a little statue of the Eiffel Tower that my grandfather gave me after he returned from a trip when I was very small. Ah, we should all be able to go wherever we want WHEN we want.....oh wait, we can, in our poetry! Great job.

Dear Kid,
Ah, Paris the place that women love, the arts and amor so vividly shown. A glass of wine on the Champ Elysees, what better romantic spot in the world?
Warm regards,
Winslow

I only spent three days there decades ago, but you did evoke lovely memories - this is a lovely poem of rhyming quatrains with good specific details that portray the allure of this city most effectively

I was transported by your walk-about. You brought back vivid memories of Paris and her landmarks. (I wonder about "au revoir," which actually means to re-see; maybe "a dieu" would be better regarding "cares".) Thanks for sharing...it sounds like you're yearning for a travel.

Joan E., So glad you could re-walk Paris and its landmarks! HA! Well "au revoir" literally means "goodbye", while "adieu" means farewell. I felt that "adieu" may be too formal, as in bidding a person farewell. And au revoir, just a plain ole goodbye. Hmmmm....guess I'll have to re-think that one. But, thanks very much for that. Always love good input! I AM yearning for travel. Mainly to the beach! This weather here is for penguins and polar bears only. Thank you for your great review and comments. Will definitely take your suggestion on board. With regards, Sue

Let me know what you decide.
We're still having our strange heat wave--I am not trying to rub it in, nor am I complaining--just observing!
Enjoy Inauguration Day.
-
Okay, here goes. I think we are both correct. Hmmm.....
Literal translation is always a problem. Au revoir can mean "ta ta" or "until then" or "goodbye". Depends on so many different scenarios.
Adieu is farewell. In that particular sentence, it would have to read, "l'adieu" to all my cares. It probably is more fitting, I agree. However, since it's subjective, and I like the sound of "au revoir" better for this piece, I think I'll leave it.
But, thank you VERY much for your input. Always open to anything in your reviews. How fluent are you in French. Do you speak it often?
-
I used to teach French, but I support your decision as the author to stay true to your concept of what you are trying to communicate and the sound of the language choice that goes with it. See you soon--
Joan

I'm arguing with a French teacher???!!! LOL!!! That's too funny!
I called my daughter, who speaks fluently, to see what she thought. When I told her of your suggestion, she went, "Oh, yes, that's correct". So, here I am going against two people who know their french! HA!
I think the REAL reason I want to stay with au revoir is because MOST people are familiar with the word and it would touch them in a more familiar way.
I really do appreciate your help! I'm jealous. I wish I had learned French in my youth. THE most beautiful language in the world!
Please don't think me obstinate. I always welcome suggestions!
Au revoir, bon soir! (my best attempt) tee hee!
-
As I said, you are not being obstinate, but rather staying true to your convictions.
A demain-
Joan

Oh! Studied French! I love it so much. My daughter is fluent, having taken it for 4 years in high school and now 4 years in college. She gets a bit rusty if she's not speaking it regularly. Hope you keep yours polished! Thank you for your very kind review and lovely comments. With regards, Sue

Memories are such wonderful treasures, are they not. I too travel in my mind whenever I'm restless. Paris is lovely and a nice departure from the freezing norm of your existence at the moment I'm sure. well done
