This should be required reading for all of us. DON'T read what's next? Hahaha. That's an open invitation to me.
I couldn't stop myself for a couple chapters, but I'll wait for the big payout to review. (Of course, I probably won't even be around to do that) I'm lucky to have a handful of reviewers who tell me like it is. I could churn out well-received drivel till the cows come home, so pointing out to me that everything I write isn't excellent or even good.
I have been able to learn and improve here. Truthfully, anyone who truly wants to can improve right here at Fanstory.
Sadly, not everyone is here for that reason and I know it bugs the serious reviewers to no end.
After a little over a year I have found that nothing I've written over the last fifty years is anywhere near finished or ready to present. I honestly didn't know that.
I can only hope that the top reviewers here are satisfied that SOME of us listen and and are delighted to receive the help. This kind of help exists NOWHERE else. How can I trust a stranger's opinion? It means so much to know that the opinions on my work come from real people whom I know. I not only know them, I have a basis upon which to weigh the value of their opinion.
When a top writer here tells you something, a moderately intelligent person should listen.
Well, I'm just going to ramble on forever and write my own piece in this little box that never runs out of room. :)
Looking forward to more of this. It gets even better folks! Yep, I peeked. I'm so rebellious!! mikey

Well when my best incentive for not reading ahead is you can wait until it's properly promoted ... and you read this one for only 2 cents. When greed don't work ... Thanks, Mikey for reading. I'm thrilled you found it helpful. I had some fun writing it back then. It seems to still have legs. Glad to have you aboard.

Hi Jay
I love this - such a professional write from a Crit! Well worth six stars to me - for content. For humour. For a thorough post, and without looking too hard, I couldn't even find a punctuation error.
You nailed the ending: Here I am, dear fellow Critters, warts and all. Tell you what--you don't twitter and point at my warts and I'll overlook your enormous Critter butt ....
And doesn't Mr Spell-check have his very own unique personality. I'm glad you recognized him as a male - I do too, and would have had to drop a star should you have called him Mrs Spell-check.
I enjoyed this, Jay, over my early morning coffee, first read of the day.

Thank you for your entertaining look into the mind of a 'Critter'. To heck with Mr. Spell-Check. I don't like him anyway. What does he know? I have always appreciated your crits and hope to continue to receive them.

I'm glad you appreciate them, Delahay. You have to take it with a grain of seaweed. A poet I'm not, so I approach them intuitively.

I'm glad that you approach them intuitively since that is how I write them.

This was great mate. Really glad I came back here for a read. I even thought I might have already done that. Good work mate. Helps us understand your critting. But I figured I pretty well understood your CV in this area already seeing I have been subjected to some of the above hehe.

Thank you, Geoff. I see you've read both of them. (I'm scrolling from the top down, which gets kinda confusing.)

Jay: I like the cross you are carrying for us all these years on FS. As a professional insurance man, you care about more than your clients. Thanks for celebrating with us! Cheers! I'm sure that the pointy stars in your pockets have been shared with many fans who are now your friends. I appreciate your honesty, Mr. Critt. Congrats on the all time best award.
In May 2015, I will be celebrating one year on FS. I am approaching the library and community education to start teaching poetry for fun. (OK, I am watching my verbs!) My community is 3000 people in southern Minnesota. There is talent here. I hope to encourage writing as a therapy for the long winter blues.
Do you keep your writings in a journal? Are you published? Did I say that I appreciate you? Ok, I do. flylikeaneagle

Thank you, Nancy, first of all for reading, but also kindly telling me it has meaning for you. What a marvelous thing you are doing in Minnesota. You should find a goldmine of talent and a great platform. Poetry can go far to dispel the Winter Blues. I can't think of a more upbeat, energetic person to fill the post.
I have a few electronic books published on Amazon and I'll be looking for an agent for my fantasy trilogy, The Trining.
I am humbled having you appreciate me. Keep me in the loop about your poetry teaching group.

Very well-written chapter. I found myself glued to every word. I think the way you review is perfect and it should be posted on FS front page. Too many times people give six stars and even 5 stars based on friendship or fanship. Lots of these stories and poems deserve a two or possibly a three.
Most exceptional read.

Vergie, you really know how to hit an ego's g-spot. Thanks for your kindness. Thank you for your 6 stars. And thank you simply for being here for me.

Hello, my friend. I decided to check out your work since you became a fan of mine. I must say, you are good at writing.
I enjoyed this post very much. It is a learning experience for sure. It brought to mind the reasoning behind my own reviews and how I rate them. To be honest, I think I'm a bit one sided in favor of friends and fans. Unless something strikes me as great, or I'm low or out of sixes, I usually rate them as a 5. I know it's wrong, but it's hard to break the habit.
I love that you are straight forward in your writing. You seem to say it as you see it. I always admire that. I hate it when people beat around the bush - yet I am guilty of it a lot of the time.
I will look forward to reviews from you because of your straight-forwardness. I am here to learn, more than to get a pat on the back. My feelings don't get hurt. My only fear is that I make so many mistakes, especially in grammar and punctuation, that a knowledgeable person might just plain give up on me.
I've enjoyed reading this post but I have only one 6 left. I am going from this post to your other one; WHY This Critter Crits, and I may need it for that one. Best wishes, my friend.
Always with respect,

A five from you is always exemplary, especially when you give the next one a six. Thanks, Elgie. I'm looking forward to reading some of your posts.

I hope you realise that by posting this essay on critting, you impose an enormous burden .on us critters - we must try to live up to your critting expectations.
This is lively and funny and holds the interest since it deals with a task most of us wrestle with daily.
May I suggest a further category for you - the 'OMG I'm not going to review that' group. These are posts so poor that not a single positive can be found to say about them, yet often the authors are steadfast in their belief that their writing has literary merit.
I see a sequel further down the page - I'm off to take a look.

Of course, I'm reading these in reverse order. This to liked the other, not so, but that's cool. I'll take the six now, and hide my butt with my tail on the second. Lots more coming down the road, Steve. There're a total of eleven segments, not unlike a lemon. Thanks, really, for your kind remarks and your six.

I remember this well and the postings that followed. It was and remains, fun to read, as well as informative.
It did dredge up a quote that I remember, that went something like this....
"You can tell a writer is getting along in years when he double spaces at the end of sentences!"
Thanks, Jay

Welcome home dear friend. I believe you only missed the last one or two of "The Trining". But all but the last of "Seasons of Charles Mumph" which posts tomorrow night. Did you have fun?

I think I have only given out one or two 2 stars since I have been on FS, but believe me those people deserved it and I still felt guilty giving it to them. I enjoyed reading your post.

Thanks, Barbara. I remember giving out one 2 star rating. I, too, know they deserved it. But I felt vindicated and truly upbeat! I never have to worry about that with you.
