Like so many things Christians have dragged in from the pagan world, there stands the Christmas tree. I've tried to fuss at church, when they bring in practices like Halloween and Easter egg hunts, but in the name of cultural relevance they stay. "We have to reach the people where they're at."
When I say, we were never commanded to celebrate Christ's birth, but rather his resurrection, and certainly not on Saturnalia, people look at me like I'm really weird.
Anyway, you've penned a great poem highlighting the history of tannenbaum that the prophet warned against. I like how you have God asking, "what are they doing??"
Thanks for sharing,
Julie

Every year our zoo decorates its trees with 'the lights before Christmas.' It's a huge event with caroling, an ice slide, and lights in the shapes of animals. Last year, someone saw a large weed growing on an island in a street in downtown Toledo, and decorated the weed. As people saw it, they added decorations, and then started placing gifts under it, to be given to homeless people. The news media picked up the story, and it spread far and wide.
I've never thought of a Christmas tree as being an idol, since I don't worship the tree, but the One who made it. Interesting Scripture passage, though. Thanks for making me think. Carol

Haha. I have been wondered how the Christmas tree was invented. You answered my question. I have seen so many Christmas tree colors in nature in the fall here. The red leaves against the green ever greens make a Christmas tree color. Maybe the fall color gave them the idea.
Well done.
