This story in a poem delivers a haunting, and very powerful message. I was an occasional smoker for twenty-five years. I quit in 1996 because smokers I knew either died or had emphysema. Had I not quit, your poignant poem could have been about me.

By all means I thank God that like me you were able to break the bonds that held us captive to an ugly and sinister habit. Thank you for your review.

Great Poem Nomi338! I really liked the rhyming and the message of this poem. I felt like I was reading about my father. Such a great message and so clear too. Keep up the great work!

Thank you Harry. I hope that if it is not too late that your father can find the strength of will to break free of the prison that is addicted to tobacco.
-
Well thank you Nomi338.

There is a lot of emotion in this piece which really pours out in your writing. I could feel how sad the loss of your friend was to you and I am really sorry for your loss. An excellent piece of writing.

Thank you Jacob. I was hit hard because just a few years earlier I had finally succeeded in kicking my own years long addiction to tobacco. Her story could well have been my own.

a haunting poem about the impact of heavy smoking and the needless early lost of life that often occurs, same thing with drug use and excessive alcohol use which you alluded to as well. like the last line I am haunted by a memory

Thank you Jake. I knew the two women mentioned in the poem. Most of the poem is totally factual which made the words all the more sad and tragic.

I really wish I had six stars to give you for this story in a poem that is so very true. I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. My mother died from lung cancer because of smoking from an early age until her death. I tried so hard to get her to quit, but she said she just couldn't. I am thankful that I don't smoke! Thank you for sharing my friend! Blessings, Teri

My children's father has been a smoker all his life...with all of us lecturing him about it. He quits and starts again all the time. His cough is rougher and he tires so soon lately, but of course, it's not the cigarettes. I fear that this poem will be one for his kids but what can I do? Your words were spot on and the grief haunts those left behind.

Thank you. As long as he is still alive there is the chance of his being able to kick this nasty habit. I did to everyone's surprise, none more than me.

My father was a heavy smoker. At the dinner table his smoke would flow to where I was sitting. I hated the smell. He tried for years to quit. He started during the Korean Conflict. Finally, in 1985 my third son was born, and he was very allergic to cigarette smoke. My pediatrician said if Andrew was around the smoke, it was slowing killing him. I told my dad, at the time we lived in the same small town. Dad quit. The withdrawal he went through was horrible. He'd smoked Camel unfiltered. Thank you for sharing this poem with us. I believe it's one all should read.

You honor me with your strong comments. I smoked from the age of fourteen until I was in my sixties. I still cannot believe that I was able to finally quit after so many attempts. The end came after I stopped trying so hard.

Thank you for sharing this heartbreaking story in a poem, my friend. I know this too with Mama and my oldest brother. Metastatic cancer got them both. Alcoholism took my father early on in January of 1976. Jack and I had just married.
Beautifully written and illustrated.
Blessings, Nomi dear. A virtual six today and compliments.

A beautifully written poem. I can relate to your message written beneath the poem as well. As a former smoker, I see friends and loved ones who have continued to smoke and watch as they suffer with sicknesses or pass away. I am thankful that I quit and I hate that so many still suffer from the effects of this addiction. Nicely done.
