What a fascinating essay! I definitely learned something I didn't know, as per the prompt. I'm curious though what a "milking parlor" is, and how it alleviated the complexity of cleaning the Surge Milkers.

Thank you. With a milking parlor, the whole milking system is cleaned automatically. Even the milkers come off the cow and hang themselves back up automatically. There is no bending as the cows are on a raised platform. All I had to do was clean the udders and attach the milkers. I did have to hose the floor after milking, but that was a piece of cake after all those years of cleaning and lifting those heavy milkers. The surge milkers had to be taken off the cow and dumped into a milk conveyor that carried the milk to the tank. Those milkers probably weighed up to seventy pounds when full of milk.

Yowie! Yeah, seventy pounds is a lot. My cats' kitty litter bags were forty pounds, and I struggled with them a lot. I can't imagine having to carry 70-lb. surge milkers.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. It was like heaven when we switched to the milking parlor. Our milk inspector was a stickler for cleanliness, so the milkers had to be kept spotless. Some farmers only washed the straps occasionally, but with our inspector, I didn't dare take a chance. I never knew when he might stop by.
