Your comments concerning Maurico tugged at my heart and brought a tear. Do you know his final outcome in life? No matter what else happened in his life, perhaps his greatest achievement was his impact on you and your career. I'm sure many, many young men and women are better off today because you were in their lives. Good teachers can be hard to find, but so very very valuable. Great post. ann

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Annmuma. I appreciate it so much. Unfortunately, after he graduated 8th grade back in 2016-2017, I lost contact with him. I hope he's living his best life, surrounded by people who love and value him. Thank you again for reading. Take care. :D :D

Doesn't surprise me, that a state full of liberals don't walk the talk they espouse the nation to do. Let the kid drown. He can't make it after all. Concentrate of the rich and famous with extraordinary family money. I think you are happier in Arkansas.

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Tom. I appreciate it so much. Yes, I'm much happier in Arkansas and adore my students and colleagues here. I've just gotten my class list for this year, and even though I don't recognize any from the brief interludes I had with last year's 2nd graders, I hope and pray I can build another family community, one that's loving, empathic, respectful, and welcoming for my new third graders. Thank you again for reading. Take care. :D :D

This is a delightful story of a dedicated teacher sincere about making a difference in young lives. That coach made a statement that NO educator should ever verbalize out loud, about any student, even if it was a personal thought. Just think. Many of your students will remember you for the rest of their lives. You never really know how significantly you have impacted some of your students. Best wishes in the contest.

Thank you for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it, and I'm thrilled you enjoyed it. Thank you also for pointing out my two grammar errors. I've fixed them. Yes, his comment was devastating, and even though it came from years of disappointment (in his opinion) with Mauricio, it still didn't excuse his action. I'm grateful I could be there for Mauricio when I was. Thank you again for reading and reviewing. Take care. :D :D

I love your story. I haven't looked at your reviews, but I know every reader would like to know if you stayed in touch or followed Mauricio. My reader curiosity aside, the real story is what Mauricio did for you. And you, in turn, bring that strong commitment to your students like you did for him.
I am sorry, I don't have six. Thank you for entering this contest, and for being a wonderful teacher! Terry.

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Terry. I'm thrilled you enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I lost contact with Mauricio after he graduated 8th grade. I hope and pray he's made good choices and is doing well. He would be 21 or 22 now, a college sophomore or junior. Yes, Mauricio did so much for me; he and I had another incident where an older 8th grader teased him for his red, red lips. I don't remember what I said when this student turned to me and said, "Doesn't it look like he's wearing lipstick, Ms. Myers?" Whatever it was, it stopped the teasing/bullying, and I heard a soft "Thank you, Ms. Myers" as I passed Mauricio. I was also one of the only teachers who could get a smile from him or still interact with him, even when he went to the office. He was still a good kid; I hope he's seen that for himself. Thank you again for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it. Take care. :D :D

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Teri. I'm thrilled you enjoyed it so much. Awwww, thank you. That means a lot to me. I do the best I can with my kiddos, striving to create a warm, welcoming, and *loving* classroom culture where they feel accepted no matter what. Thank you again. Take care. :D :D

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Sally. I'm thrilled you enjoyed it. Yes, I, too, am so grateful I pursued my teaching career. It wasn't what I planned on doing, but now I can't see being anything else. I love it, and I love seeing my kiddos each day--even when they frustrate me, I still love them. Thank you again for reading and commenting. Take care. :D :D

This is excellent. Our classrooms need more teachers with a philosophy like yours. Did you keep up with Mauricio and see how he turned out? I hope no one ever gave up on him. No one should ever be a loss cause.

No child is ever a lost cause. Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. As a retired teacher, I know plenty of teachers, administrative staff, and others who don't believe all children can learn. They can. Good luck with the contest. I haven't seen you in my PM box for a while. I'm glad I caught this post.

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Barbara. I'm thrilled you enjoyed it. Yes, I've seen that too, and I've heard some claiming that one day I'll become "jaded." I hope and pray that's *not* the case because no child deserves to have a teacher who only sees the limitations instead of the potential.
Yes, it's been a while since I've posted, but I have more chapters I'm working on--the second one to "Escaping into Love's Grasp." I've also decided to revamp "Chasing Shadows" as Gabriel's character wasn't working the way I wanted. I also have a short story I've been inspired to write with my parents as the characters. Hopefully, I'll have those up soon.
Thank you again for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it. Take care. :D :D

Lovely sentiment. I teach at a college for neurodiverse students. They are less held back by their differences than by the shame they have accrued from educators who thought they didn't matter.

Thank you for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it. Wow! Some of my friends have encouraged me to teach college, and maybe one day I will, but right now, my place is with the elementary grades. I'm glad your students have you. Even in college, they need professors who believe in them. Thank you again for reading and reviewing. Take care. :D :D

Yikes. That administrator was long past his expiration date. What a HORRIBLE thing to have even thought, let alone say out loud...to the child's TEACHER, no less. (as in, you reserve comments like that for your family...and even then, you should be ashamed!)
I'm glad it didn't sour you on the profession.
Good luck with this entry in the contest.

Thank you for reading and reviewing. I'm glad you liked this story. It was difficult to hear, and I'm grateful it didn't sour my teaching profession. Maybe it's also because I've been on the other side of the fence with my learning disabilities. I often tap into my experiences with my teachers and think about what worked for me to give me a starting point. Thank you again for reading and reviewing. Take care. :D :D
