This is such an important lesson, Barbara, that you are teaching your granddaughters. I'm so glad we live in a time in which women can gain entry into pretty much any career they want, and that the lines have been blurred between traditionally men's and women's jobs. So many more opportunities for women now. Sorry you didn't get to follow your dream, but it sounds like you had a fulfilling career despite that.

Your granddaughters are lucky to have a grandma like you who is a good writer and can so readily share her wisdom with them. - Jim

I was never told I couldn't be whatever I picked. But I changed my mind so often they gave up on counseling me. Lol. Children and grandchildren are sometimes shocked that we had other aspirations . This was great. Gretchen

Barbara, this is another very cool post. You are one cool grandma! Poor Great Grandpa, LOL. Thankfully those days are gone. This is, of course, great advice. Very well done. Terry.

Yay, Yay sister. I guess I was born more stubborn because I always study what I felt like. I couldn't compromise to choose something that will make me unhappy. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writing, this was a very interesting story and thank God things has changed.

It is a pity you could not pursue the career you really wanted Barbara. I wanted to go to art college and my Father said no at the time. I did study art at evening classes later in life. I enjoyed learning about your early life Barbara, being a teacher would have been very rewarding, a fine post, love Dolly x x x

Another lovely one in this series and such an important message for girls. It is the opening up of opportunities for girls through decent education that is so crucial. Good luck to your grandchildren.

My parents were the same, except my mother changed a little as she grew older. I told her I wanted to go into real estate. She said, ai think you can do anything you set your mind to, Sally Marie." She died a few weeks later. I entered real estate school and became a Realtor.

This is definitely a book for now. These dreams develop in the early years and the confidence to go with them.

Marvelous chapter, my friend.

Sending you my best today as always,
Sal XOs

This is good advice. Times have changed but I'm thinking in some cultures the parents may still decide their children's careers. My son married a Korean girl. She is a teacher who owns a school to help get kids ahead so they can get into Harvard or Yale. There are a lot of Koreans in Chattanooga. My son goes to church with them. He says they are all either doctors or teachers and all of them very rich.

This work has reached the exceptional level

Being a Vet is a lot of work just to get through school and even more when you start a practice. What a wonderfully written letter. I like this project.

Best of luck with your writing!
Have a great day, and God bless.

Thanks for the excellent advice Barbara although it is just about 65 years too late.
Neither myself nor my brother had any say in our career choice. My mother was a very dominant woman, we had to take the job that paid the best. I must say I have always regretted that situation but hey ho. Great write. Cheers Jen.
