Wow, you caught the look in her eyes, the eyes of a young girl not yet ready to be a woman.
This free verse poem captures the angst of a woman bleeding as a young woman and how in every culture the mere fact of her blood defines her womanhood. I think this poem deserves a prize for delivering the reality of blood spilled over wartorn countries where women stay home waiting for their men and forever bleed for their and their men's life!
Thank you for telling it like it is!

How men can say the female is the weaker sex, I don't know. They wouldn't last the day out if they were to be given just a fraction of what we endure. This is such a well written free verse poem. I don't normally like unrhymed poems, but some do strike a cord and are very poetical. This is one of them. Well done, and good luck in the contest. :) Sandra xx

Hello Sandra. Thank you. I have been reading Thomas Wolfe and some of his thoughts inspired me. I appreciate you and your comments... and like you, I do think that women keep humanity moving forward and we have to be strong to do it :). Hugs!

These young girls grow up fast in this culture and are soon used as rubbing rags, abused and tossed aside when they grow old, your poem is powerful and raw Melissa and your words angered me as these young girls have no protection and are vulnerable to men. A woman's life is hard enough as she holds the family together but in this culture she stands no chance of having a good life, much enjoyed, wish I had a six for you, I always enjoy your work, love Dolly x x x

This poem reminded me of my Mother, who passed away, at 85 yrs old, in 2016. She was the strongest person I ever did, or will, know. She was alive at. A time that was not taking women seriously. She knew what was right to do. She raised five children and our Dad was often at seems as a Merchant Marine. I enjoyed this prm. It has a direct message and it is written clearly and boldly. Good work! :))

Hi Melissa Wow what a great post And you have chosen this image which is so powerful and telling. This photo has something a little unnerving in it Her eyes are so penetrating as if she can look into your soul I always feel weird when I see it. But it fits your words perfectly
cheers Chris
Hope all is good with you

This was such a haunting photograph, timeless really, and a perfect choice to illustrate your free verse poem. You have written both beautiful and sad commentary on the fate of women everywhere, but particularly in certain cultures. Good luck in the contest.
