Thank you and thanks for catching my oops. I usually read these stories after I post them. It was late last night, and I was tired--therefore the oops! Thanks again, I will edit and correct.

This was fun to read.
I couldn't help but hear my own "critter" stories and wars. It is a war and it never ends! Gardening is much like writing, why do we do it? Because we love it.
Thanks for the laughter.
Great job.

Thank you. Wildlife can make things difficult at times. Oh, the blackbirds arrived yesterday, so here we go again. Lol

That was so funny, not really, but to me it was!! Lol. You have some very canny wildlife around your home, they know what and when to come and eat all your produce. I know what the blackbirds are like, they would clear my feeders in minutes. They came in their hundreds, and I don't live in a place like yours. I'm not sure I'd be happy to be told there are loads of bears in the woods by my home, either! LOL. You'll have to let us know if the blackbirds do come back. Well done, a very enjoyable story. Good luck in the contest. :) Sandra xx

Thank you. The blackbirds came back yesterday, and my niece has already renewed her battle with them. I looks to be an interesting summer. Lol

Oh, my, this account shows how difficult it can be to grow a garden and keep a goal of bird watching, considering how many other forms of wildlife might show up instead, or in addition to, what one thinks is supposed to be there. I know blackbirds live in certain parts of the country, but we have a tendency to get starlings, who are also black but smaller, and they also scold the way you describe. This is well-written. I only noticed the smallest of fixes, but I also wanted to point out my favorite sentence here: The bear wasn't pleased and spent several nights snorting and snuffling around the house while my cats hid under the bed (along with me).
Little fixes:
M first inkling
Change to: My first inkling

He explained how the lime would sweeten the ground, which in turn, drove the grubs away.
I would take the comma out after the word 'turn' there.

Perhaps their not vegetarians.
change their to they're

News I could have done without.
This is a fragment. Maybe try: That was news I could have done without.

Thank you, and thanks for catching the oops! I apologize for the errors. I didn't edit this last night because it was late and I was tired. I usually read them over immediately after I post a story. So, It's my bad, and I will edit and correct. I'm glad you enjoyed the story.

A wonderful story of your adventures and misadventures with wildlife. Growing fruit and vegetables isn't as easy as one would assume! And can be frustrating. Best wishes for your story and for your garden.

Thank you. I live in Michigan where we are surrounded by wildlife. It does make growing flowers or a garden difficut, but it can be done. Lol

Oh my goodness, all your efforts to grow food to eat and feed those birds was attacked by an army of different creatures here! Not to mention the insects that eat the lettuce leaves, but you have bigger animals to deal with here! I enjoyed the battle here.

Just one edit for you:

(My) first inkling that there was another problem)

A fun post, very entertaining, love Dolly x

I have been trying with the idea of planting a small garden in my yard. After reading this, I'm a little less inclined now. I have never had a garden so I'd be starting from ground zero. This was funny to read and I could visualize the whole thing. Very well written and quite entertaining. Gretchen

Thank you. It depends on where you live whether critters give you problems or not. We live next to a large woods, and the cornfield gives animals cover to get close to our house. The blackbirds? I don't know why they plague us. Usually, they live in swampy areas, and there is no swamp around here. Lol

Well, this is a delightful, entertaining story to read, but I can tell that the actual experience wasn't. We've had a lot of problem with squirrels eating all the sunflower seeds and raccoons eating the suet. They destroyed numerous feeders, too. We never could thwart them so we finally gave up trying.

Thank you. We take the feeders down at night and put them in the garage. We gave up on leaving them out in the dark.

You have certainly had your trials and tribulations with your fruit and vegetable patch

A couple of typos,

"M first inkling" and, regarding the racoons,

"Perhaps their not vegetarians." They're.

As for the competition. I think this is a great contender. Your story is chock to the brim with wildlife, adventure and a humorous take on life's annoyances.

Your story tells of an idyllic life. We, too, live away from the hubbub of city life. We're twelve miles from anywhere, save for the golf course which abuts our sixty-seven acres, needed to keep our 40-90 head of Herefords happy which actually our my father-in-law. Between three parcels the bovine have 180 acres to roam.

Thank you. Before my husband passed away, we always had cattle. We milked cows for several years, then raised beef cattle for several more. I kind of miss the cows.
