Who's say one isn't a poet? There are many styles of poetry.
You did a great job, Irishauthorme. I enjoyed reading your
heartfelt poem. I could feel your sadness as I read. Your rhymes
worked well, the image choice was a great pairing, and your
message was clear. Losing someone you loved is always sad
no matter how much time has elapsed. You always think of
why and what if.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Hi Jan, thank you for reading, all the stars, and your great, in-depth comments. This lady and I were very close at one time, and I never realized just how much she meant to me until she was gone.
I think that I get help from somewhere out there.
Thanks again, I appreciate your encouragement.

Thank you for sharing this with us. Yes, a lost loved one, even dear friends, never leave us forever. They remain in our hearts. I enjoyed reading your poem. You may not be a poet, but this is a beautifully emotional poem.

The absence and loss is echoed in this stanza:
"So that Christmas was lonely,
it was a hard time of year.
No lights, no tree, no presents,
no jiggered hot cups of cheer.
A stark image: "I visit the still, quiet place,
read the lettering on stone."
On another topic: You said. "I am not a poet."
How do you qualify poetry or being a poet. Surprise...you are a very striking poet. Well done. A+

That's a pretty good job for not being a poet. You have done a good job with the rhyme. A little work on the meter, and you will have a good one. Set this aside for a week or two, and then pick it up again. You will find a few things that you will want to change.

Your poem is well written, has good rhyming, and expresses the sadness you feel for your dear friend that has passed on. As we get older, it seems we lose them one by one.

hank you, Ann, for reading, all the stars, and your kind comments!
Yes, we lose more every year. Only 4 members of my graduating high school class left, no more reunions.

John Prine will do that to you. He's one of the great American songwriters. Your loss is similar to mine. When my Mother died there was no service, just a call. What a wonderfully written poem. Best of luck with your writing!
Have a great day, and God bless.

Hi Mike, thank you for reading, all those stars, and your kind comments. Lost my Mom in similar circumstances, that was a tough one.

John Prine is always good inspiration. I think I hear a touch of sweetness in your grief. It doesn't mitigate the longing, but it comes time makes the grief pure, devoid of all the ancillary nonsense that fills the whole in our heart when someone dear passes like a breeze and is gone leave us nothing to hold on to.
I'm no poet, either, Irish, but I know honest words when I read them.
Peace, friend.

Wow, I am humbled. Thank you for reading, the galaxy of stars, and your welcomed in-depth comments. You know how to read between the lines. From Scarborough Fair, "She once was, a true love of mine."
