This is a wonderful tribute to a teacher who had a profound impact on your life. It is certainly well written. I am sorry I do not have a sixer to give it. Best of luck in the contest! Evi

Evi, thank you for your kind and thoughtful review! Terry.

Another story about a teacher who changed a life. I had a literature teacher in high school who convinced me that reading books opened doors, even if my peers thought they were uncool. I never told Mrs. Hersch what her words meant to me, but you'll be able to share this essay with Mrs. Fryar. And that's pretty damn cool.
I imagine she will love what you've written here.

Terry,
I am really humbled by your accomplishments in life. You have told how a single person teaching the right things can have positive impacts without limit. How many others might she have started down other paths? I am impressed with the simplicity of her teaching and your own ability to zero in on the things that matter, and to know what winning really is. I'm sure Mrs. Maridell Fryar will be thrilled to read this. One proofing note below.

Sue, I did correct the edit, but not in time for you. Thank you for the kind words. The accomplishments of her students are remarkable, teachers, a bunch of lawyers, judges, a Peabody Award winner, a Director of a large national museum, and many Ph.D. Professors, business owners, Academy Award winning writer, national newspaper columnist, and on and on. Terry.

I think people that God brings by us is so important for our development, my father wasn't great at being a dad, but he was still a top bloke, nor were the great sportspeople I knew, until I became part of a family of very clever people who taught me to use the grey matter between my ears. Beautifully written Terry, thanks for sharing, blessings Roy
Typo : Kirby and I will (go) out

Congratulations for writing a succinctly played out work that falls advantageously in tandem with the entry requirements of the "Teaching Affected Me" Contest. More so acquainting us with the resume of an exceptional teacher, who imbued you with the toga of successful living.
The work earns its texture through its effective use of anecdotes synonymous with the adage: "never say die."
Exceptional work. I wish you the best in the contest.

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. Yes, one teacher can make a difference in a student's life. I enjoyed reading and good luck with the contest.
"Chuck, in the next thirty minutes, we will write up six reasons companies should hire us, and then Kirby and I will out and convince them to do just that." (will GO out and...)

Aww! Your respect and gratitude to your debate teacher is a theme in several of your writings. It's where you met your two very good friends. I would say that not only was she a fabulous teacher, you were a very good student with an open and receptive mind to the teaching. I liked your mention of "ethos, pathos, and logos" - sounds like the Three Musketeers of debate! Best wishes in the contest!

Helen, thank you for your kind words, and you are right the Three Musketeers of debate, it's from Persuasion, by Aristotle. Terry.

Everyone who has learned how to learn, how to think, owe a great deal to those who cared enough to teach us and not give up on those of us who were a little bit slower than some others. I was pretty full of myself when I took my first semester of journalism class. I was already an adult, maybe even older than my teacher, who graduated from college early. I presented my first assignment and she politely ripped it apart. The most telling and embarrassing thing that happened was that I misspelled the word interest. She said without pity, "Until you learn how to spell a word properly, you should abstain from using it." I never forgot that. In today's world with spellcheck, there is no excuse for turning in an assignment with misspelled words. Back then I did not have spellcheck, but being in college and full of my own importance, I was brought appropriately low.

Thank you for much for the six stars!!! I did have a real problem with spelling, but spell check and my Alexa app not so much anymore. Terry.

I give thanks for all the tools that are now available to make those of us who are not perfect appear to be somewhat perfect.
