. . .and he is a great storyteller, too, Terry. I enjoyed both your
intro and Sam's POV story. His was filled with great descriptions
and imagery creating words. He's learned a lot about the ways of
humans and still loves his owner. His description of the huge
jackrabbit was hilarious. There is a statue in the next town
over of one that's bigger than 3 bulls put together--you know
like a landmark. I'd watch Sam. He may be trying to upstage
your writing.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Oh Terry, you ole cat daddy, I just love you! I have never met anyone that can take a simple story and make it so much fun! You have a natural charm that just oozes as you write. I actually check to see when your next story might be coming, because I always know I will have at least one smile that day. Thank you also to Sam and I hope that eventually he will get his Texas jackrabbit!

That is absolutely delightful, from your very clever wit, to your wonderfully impressive words in Sam's vocabulary. I laughed out loud in several places.
Most enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.

Good ol' Sam! And with a brain like that, he doesn't need any highfalutin' degree. Thank you for getting us into the mind of one of the intelligent non-human species! I think you might consider changing Sam's gospel into a different font color so the reader can tell at a glance someone else's story is here. Congrats on your 50th post!!

but what do I know about dogs. (maybe a question mark here? You answer yourself right after so it seems like a question.)

Helen, thank you for the review and good suggestions, I should have Sam look it over! Terry.

This story is totally delightful. I'm a dog person while my daughter is a cat person. My father, the hunter, had many beagles, rabbit hunting dogs. This story might have turned out differently had the granddaughter been walking one of them. Haha! I like pet stories and the idea of Sam telling the story, and I admire his discipline.

Oh my gosh. My side hurts from laughing! Congrats all around for a great story and Milestone Post #50! You have the best sense of humor and "SAM" has the vocabulary of a PhD ~ well, maybe not from Harvard, but geez. I don't know many who drop ignominious into a sentence ~ certainly not while sniffing advantageous spots to make their "deposits" ~ although most of them are full of...
Well! As I was saying! THIS (again, again) is why you must never leave the site! You've too much to offer!
As for your opening paragraph, including this charmer:
"Okay, it was 245 months or so past the minimum, but nobody asked for proof of age." --
I declare a new movement! Let's all of us beyond the age of, oh, say, 59 1/2 begin to write our ages on every census, medical form, etc. in MONTHS!
Or~when we meet someone new. Imagine sitting nursing that Gentleman Jack in a well-appointed "lounge" somewhere swanky (Think James Bond because why not? It's a fantasy!)
And "SHE" comes sauntering over.
"Hi There, my name is Saralee" (selected because it ought to excite anyone who has ever lusted for cheesecake)
Yada, Yada...a bit of flirtatious back and forth, and then you might say something subtle like:
"Yes. I do play a fairly admirable game of golf for someone 840 months of age...."
Either she'll whip out her cell phone smiling while accessing her computer function... Or (Perhaps, since this is fantasy)--
She'd retort:
"Oh? I do like mature man, I'm a mere 800 months old..."
(Cut/ That's a WRAP!)
Holey Moley.
See what you started?
Sixty-five thousand stars--(give or take what FS rules allow)
You just made my day!

Omg I loved this! Your humor is great. I always love animal voices in stories. The decisions poor Sam had to make in a split second. I don't think as an adult I would have been able to think that quick! By the way I moved into one of those 55 and older places when I was 48. That's what I get for marrying an old coot!

This would make a good scene in one of those talking dog movies. I can see Sam working through the possibilities and consequences in this situation. And I love how the dog even brought the cat loving observer into the process. Good story.

John, thank you for reading, and thanks for noting the second-place finish. I seem to be good at seconds. Terry.

It's just as hard to come in second or third as it is to win! Your work is always across the finish line, my friend.

How rare has it become to hear or read the "Cowboys Win." How long has it been since they were champeens? You and Wendy G are special to have talking dogs you can understand.
