Such a moving story. Loved the picture. Without any spelling, typos nor grammatical errors it is hard to offer any constructive suggestions. Making the font bigger would make it easier to read. You might consider changing Camels and instead of which. Also, pay straight home instead of pay home straight. It is engaging and well written. Nothing like having your own washing machine. And dryer.

Thank you Annette for your review and kind words.
When I post my original font is the largest at 36 but when I paste, this is the font that comes out.

A lovely story. It really touched my heart. If only all of us could be like Gertie, the world would be such a wonderful place. Very well written. Thanks for sharing.

I love this story! It has a little of everything rolled up in a well written piece. The illustration is whimsical and sets the tone immediately. Your writing grabbed me and held me until the end.

What a totally wonderful memory to have and remember as you grow older. Maybe one day you will become Gertie, maybe not, but it's a nice souvenir to hold

This is an excellent, sensitive, and humorous piece of writing. Thanks for sharing a story of how a young girl and a senior adult can become friends. I love the character of Gertie. You really paint a picture of her with words and the dialogue is very engaging. I would suggest reading it over and maybe use a few contractions or other more casual words so it seems more natural.
I am adding a few line editing suggestions you can use or not. I hope you don't mind.
musky = a very strong and sweet odor that's hard to ignore. Musk is what some animals emit when they are ready for sex. Maybe you mean musty? musty = having a stale, moldy, or damp smell.
although all four never worked (at the same time).
One or two were (would be) broken down, and . . .
Come on out," She called (s in she should be lower case
Great story!

This is a beautiful story, Mary. It sounds like life was pretty lonely and sad for you in the projects. How wonderful that Gertie decided to choose you as a friend. Well done.

Kindness, sincerity, homespun wisdom - Gertie provided a much-needed authentic friendship to your 9-yr-old self (important to Gertie as well) which you write about so appealingly. I can imagine how your heart sank when she was no longer there for you... and she too missed you. Your nostalgic reminiscence integrates dialogue successfully and is very moving. You describe your early life in project housing so I can picture it easily. Tough times.

You have turned your childhood memories into an emotional and touching tale and a super tribute to your unconventional friend, Gertie. That takes some doing! And hence the six stars.
Oops! Gotta run - I'm supposed to be at work and I just found out!

What a lovely story Mary, you've written about your family before. I've often wondered about the total background of many people on this site, or anywhere for that matter. This was such a heartwarming story of Gertie, who sought you out. What would we do if we didn't have kids to balance out lives. Beautifully written, blessings Roy
