A touching and caring story of you and your last dog. So pleased that you took a chance on the little pup. Sounds like you are perfect for each other and for the cats as well. So sorry for the loss of your husband but thankful you have your animal family.

Blessings
Janet

Thank you. Pup and I are very close and she sticks to me like velcro. I am an animal lover and used to rescue horses too. I learned not to become attached to our dairy cows because most cows end up the same way. Hamburger. I can't say I liked it but that is the way of farming. Thank you for the six stars. I appreciate them. Hugs

A beautiful and heartfelt story of pup. He certainly found love and a good life with you.
I know in your thinking it was the animals welfare you were thinking about.
After years of having cats, once I had 5 in the house. I was down to 2 until last month I now have only 1 left. I have a concern for him as we are in our 70's.
Good luck in the contest
Best wishes
Mary

Thank you. I do have family that will take care of my animals but I know Pup would never be happy if I was not with her. It sounds like you are an animal person too. Hugs

This is a great story and well told. That is a great last sentence. I am probably about your age, and I have said "No more dogs." So far, I have not given in.

Thank you for sharing this writing prompt with us. I enjoyed reading the story but am a little confused as to why it's on the poetry side of the house. LOL A Great Pyrenees showed up at our door one day and said, "You're the family I've chosen to live with." How could anybody turn that down? I understand.

Thank you. If you read the prompt rules it says a short story or a poem. I read some of the other entries that are is short story form too. FanStory is the one who presented it like that. I have seen them do that a few other times too. You are not the first to ask me about it.Go to the contest listing and read what it says. Hugs.

'My Last Dog', is an exceptionally well-written and heart-wrenching piece. It was a privilege to both read and review this talented writer's work. Unfortunately I've run out of sixes. Good luck with the contest. Please let me know how you get on?

Thank you. It is easy to write about something one loves. The words just come naturally. Hugs

Writing about what one loves is what it's all about :)))

It's so nice that you have the companionship of your animals and that you were able to provide love for Pup to get her over her sad start in life. It's like the two dumped kittens recognised a fellow survivor.
Your story is well written and very appealing... I enjoyed how your resistance crumbled - of course the vet knew it would as soon as Pup was in your arms.

Thank you. Yep, we did business with those two vets for years. They are brothers. Todd does large animals and Gordon cares for the small ones. They are still in business and Gordon still takes care of Pup and my cats. I think Gordon is my age or older. Gordon knew if I saw the pup I would be hooked. Hugs

Hi there,

you have this piece categorised as general poetry but it appears to be a short tory. might want to think about re-classifying as if it was critiqued as a poem it would have a very low rating.

opened the door and said, "Look, Todd, I told your brother... - need closing speech marks here.

Yeah, dogs have a way of doing this to folk. It's not right! lol

All the best

Thank you and thanks for the tip. The contest rules say short story or poem so this should be okay. I read a couple of others that are story, not poetry. Hugs

You sound just like my wife. She too is a sucker for pets. We are now down to two kittens who control her every move. Our dog, Mongrel Guts now lies beneath our back garden. His presence there doesn't seem to propel much growth.
Our dog was named like your dog and horse, after himself. He really was both a mongrel and a guts.

This deserves a six so here y' are(*) an extra one to make the five into a six. Yeah, I have had similar experiences where I hadn't meant to have another cat, but Destiny decreed otherwise. At one stage we had seven cats all together, but they lived reasonably amicably in our huge back yard and large, snug timber built house. Tea time was a hoot, it really was.
They never needed to be called, they would congregate around the tank stand as soon as the chooks were called in to bed and wait until their own dish or bowl had been placed in front of them. They would empty that and then go to each other's place to check for left overs.
If someone hadn't finished eating and another cat stuck an enquiring nose into their tea!! OMG!! What a kerfuffle!!Fisticuffs and swearing
and other examples of bad feline conduct ran riot.Once order had been restored peace would reign again. I love that the two dumped kittens fell in love with Pup, how gorgeous is that!!!!?
You were meant for each other, and your husband (God bless him) is probably so thankful to have Pup filling an empty space in your life. cheers Cass

Thank you. I love to hear other folks pet related stories. I had seven cats the year my husband died, but one I called Blue Eyes had cancer and we put him to sleep. My husband was still able to go with me that day. It was sad. Pup is 12 this year and I can see her slipping a bit. I will sure miss her when she is gone. Hugs to you.

A lovely story. I love dogs . I'm so glad you took in Pup. I am originally from India and we used to take in lots of strays while I was growing up. Thanks for sharing
With regards
