It is horrifying what greed and lust for power in the hands of an unscrupulous leader will do. No care for human life or suffering. Your poem is excellent, cleverly crafted and well written.

Well, not looking on, there are very strong measures, and for the first time Europe united. This s the end of the said dictator in more ways than one. Strength for the people of Ukraine....and how they stand, with the very help that has been put in place in the last 14 years, anticipating this action. How we wish for peace, where power hungry men continue to destroy this world. When will these men stop...or be stopped?
Best wishes

Thanks, RG. I don't see a good ending for Putin, but this may make him do something stupid.

Though this is a sad commentary on our world, it is truly an excellent poem. the descriptions are good in this picture of a beleaguered nation, along with a request for prayer.

A powerfully written sonnet describing this horrific situation with Ukraine and Russian invasion. That is one of the biggest tragedies of our time. No ambition or political differences are worth one human life. Wars are sordid, ugly and pointless things, resulting in bloodshed and loss of life.

Great imagery, visuals and presentation. Good luck in the contest.

Thanks, EM. I'm afraid that as long as we have politicians, we will have problems.

Hi Paul, that is a stunning sonnet paying tribute to an innocent country being attacked for no other reason that it believes in democracy and freedom for all.
Your poem is truly poignant.
It's a very sad moment for all of Europe, and the Western world.
Good luck. Ulla:)))

Thanks, Ulla. It is also a very tense moment for the world. That madman has nuclear weapons at his disposal.

I know, and he's just put those weapons on high alert. God help us all. Ulla:))

Such a beautifully written sonnet here. Your turn asking what will become of Ukraine.

Your couplet leaves us with an additional heartbreak to consider.

Timely, very well written, and an overall powerful piece.

Wishing you much luck with the Contest Committee. :))

Im glad to see that someone here has focused on the Ukraine. Thank you for writing this poem.
I used to have a Ukrainian landlord in the East Village of New York. I wonder how his family back home is doing. The East village was populated by many people from Ukraine. I lived on the corner of East 7th and Taras Schevchinko Place in a historic building there. The ground floor was occupied by the Surma Book and Music store. You could not ask for a nicer landlord.

I enjoyed reading your poem even though the topic is a difficult one. I could never comprehend what the people of Ukraine are going through. But I can at least send them my prayers for freedom.
