Really good true story. Coincidently, I wrote one for this contest with a somewhat similar vibe--how does one handle jerks? Your Rube got it just right. I've heard so much about Germany's reformation, and I'm sure it's accurate--to a point. Sadly, though, extreme right tribalism is on the rise everywhere. Honestly, there are some States right here where this leftover hippie wouldn't be comfortable.

Hey, I know you're an old hippie. That's partly why so many of us love ya.
Yes, I found the Germans to be very progressive and tolerant, but this stuff can rear its ugly head anywhere. I think we gotta always keep an eye out for it.
Thanks for reading and reviewing, ol' bud. I keep say I'm going to get back into writing but it's kind of a chore to get back on track. Don't know how you've been so prolific over the past decade or so.

We are of British stock here in Australia but we have plenty of "idiots" just spoiling for a fight, extreme right wingers, as you do too, we have many German friends, even in Germany, there were "brown shirts" (Nazi party) in England at the time before the war, if you look at history you'll discover WW1, and the terrible Versailles treaty spawned the nazi party in Germany. Bavaria was the birth place of Nazism. Beautifully written, blessings

Yes, I loved Germany. When I there, it was hard to believe the people ever followed someone like Hitler. It can happen anywhere.

I was in Germany 1982-85. Every German I met who fought in World War II said they were on the Russian Front but were POWs in Texas. Good for your buddy standing up to them. Nice story. What MOS were you? I was an 11B.
