I don't like Henry already and i don't even know him. Controlling behaviour and the old double standard yet again. Marlene's hair will fall out and then he'll be stuck with a bald girlfriend - serves him right, and Marlene too for being so spineless.

You nailed it. Marlene has increasingly given up her independence; she's well aware of this and is fine with it. Go figure.

Sounds like I wouldn't like Marlene much either then. I like independent thinkers.

Yes, Henry, why don't you let your hair grow silver?
But I guess we know who's running the show here. I think they're both very fortunate that her hair never turned orange, coming out of that bottle. I just hope it doesn't start falling apart. I think Henry needs to look deeper than the surface of things. Maybe they both do. Or are they happy, the way things are?

There's a book, "Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus," which I haven't read, but I'm sure it does not mention this astute observation that women tend to bend backwards under the pressure of continuous insistence (to change themselves) by men, and men revel in two things. The first: applying that constant pressure with tenacity and seeing their woman change to their whims, and second: resisting any personal change with an equal tenacity in order to persist with their garish behaviour.
Using poetic license with due permission: lucky are the woman who are coupled not with such men!

Apt observation! I read that book; very good, but doesn't address these dynamics, which you so astutely clue in to.

It never ceases to surprise me, but I know so many women who seem to be absolutely fine in a codependent relationship...
"Oh well..." seems to have become my standard response to way too many things nowadays !!!

Thanks :-)
