This is an excellent story about a wonderful time in your life. How sad that they took pets away from children in those crowded housing complexes. You did an delightful job of suggesting your mother's cunning. Best of luck with this in the contest.

You're welcome, my friend!

I grew up with dogs, beagles to be exact. I love this story, and because of your descriptive storytelling, feel that I know Sandy. Her story brought tears to my eyes. Animals have feelings and know when they are loved. Sandy traveled many miles to be with people who loved her. Thank you for this story and the picture, along with the explanation of the housing project buildings. Best wishes in the contest.

Mary:
Unfortunately, Our pets cannot understand all the crazy rules that make
it impossible for us to keep them with us no matter how much we want
to. I, like you, believe your beloved Sandy died from a broken heart. I
cried as I read your story. Good luck in the contest.

Your story had me tearing up as well. What a fine story about family love between humans and a loyal dog. I am sure creatures can die of a broken heart; separation is painful. I was worried she might have been run over when attempting to come home from even farther away.
I spotted a few minor corrections:
the order from the housing authority to remove all dogs were [should be was] rescinded.
When Ma died three years later, Sandy mourned with us [add comma here] often nuzzling up to us
All our friends loved to play with her [add comma here] especially when she joined us in our games in the yard.
You've used 'now' in the sentence straight after this one, so maybe this one could be reworded:
Now 12 years old, our Sandy started to slow down.
Perhaps change to:
When she was 12 years old, our Sandy started to slow down.

Thank you for your review and kind thoughts. I fixed what you found. Funny I had "was" but the grammar check program said "were" I thought it read wrong but thought the program knew better. I am glad you knew better than the program.
Thank you again.

The program is definitely wrong, because the subject is "the order", a singular word, and therefore the verb should be "was". If you'd written "the orders" (plural), it'd be "were".
What is the grammar check program you use? (I don't use one, just trust what I learned in school and my own instinct.)

What a wonderful story of the love of a dog, but how sad that she did probably die in sadness at not being with her loved ones. Some people can be cruel and heartless, making rules about pets, quite unwarranted if the pet is not a nuisance in any way. Lovely tribute to Sandy.
