Happy 2021 to you too!

This was printed in my local paper--I'd sent it to the editor as a year-end thank-you gift for his having printed several of my letters over the prior months--I was floored to see it appear when publication resumed mid-January.

I enjoyed reading your commentary on New Year's resolutions, and I remember the first dozen, or so, years of my life, before I, too, realized what an exercise in frustration this business of making New Year's resolutions really is. Why did our parents and grandparents ever encourage such a self-defeating practice in their offspring? Surely they had the benefit of experience! Has anyone ever stood up on a podium and said, "My life was in a shambles, up until New Year's Eve, of 1997, when I made the most powerful resolution, that rocked my world?"
NO.
I also remember the days before the mega-malls, also with a kind of nostalgia. And it was not my mother who frequented Lane Bryant, but me. Now, if I need a plus-size item, I generally use a catalog, or the internet.
Very nice image, by the way.

Hello Liz.
I get it! Don't make resolutions you have no intention of keeping. I actually make a single resolution every year and I have never broken it. I make the same one. It is: MAKE NO RESOLUTIONS. If something is good enough to to resolve to do, I just start doing, or not doing it.

This is great. I'm telling you it's the language you use. It's intelligent and we'll picked out but it FLOWS perfectly. To be honest I had to read a couple lines twice (complex). The message is hilarious too. Your close is brilliant. Good play on words.
Overall well deserved :)

Wow that's Incredible! I wish I could get something published. I got a piece oublished in a Radiology Journal. Work. But never real writing :)
-
It was printed in the Letters to Editor section; none others beneath it--thus it appeared as if it were a contribution by a guest columnist--I made a play to the ed. for having a regular column; no response, alas. (I wrote a piece months ago in which I include the text of that proposal--perhaps I'll promote it.
-
I hear you. You should get a column. That would be Amazing!!

I'm totally with you on that one, Liz, it's an excellent resolve, one I aim to keep! Well done, you could make a fortune selling this amazing piece of wisdom to the Chinese to put in their fortune cookies. :)) Loved this story, my friend, Hope you had a lovely Christmas, and I wish you a great 2021. :)) Sandra xx

Dear Liz, I am not sure if you meant this post to be satirical, or just good practical advice. but it drips with humor, always a commodity to be commended.
It certainly is posted at a time most needed, When most of us get carried away with making new resolutions.

Perfect one for the New Year. I guess we didn't have a Gimbel's in Hawaii. But I recognized the other names of the stores. I also don't make new year's resolutions. At this point, I'll just probably forget.

Great way to tie this piece together! I follow this same rule. It makes my New Year begin and end with less stress and less pressure. Another well written piece! Thanks for the heads up. :)

I enjoyed this, with its combination of warnings and good advice, for living better! It is humorous and skilfully written with the slight adaptation from Christmas shopping dangers to the disappointment of broken commitments.Clever writing.

I'm with you on this. I don't make New Year's resolutions. I know I'd never keep them. Your description of the shopping mall days really takes me back. I remember a high school classmate who spent her working life at Lane Bryant in Indianapolis. I don't know what its status is not, as so many stores have closed. This is well presented, and I admire your distinctive voice. judi
I'll just add a note to this. It would be useless for me to make New Year's resolutions, as I know I'd never keep them. Besides, if you want to improve, why should there be just one day of the year to do it? Those references to the mall really take me back. We hardly have any department stores left where I live. Happy New Year. judi
