II like free verse as well, and i think your poem here about your love for music and especially the bass. My fave lines is the one about how the touch to the strings make you feel. I used to go to the symphony when my health was better, it was a grandiose experience. i would be interested in joining this free verse club. :

Well, Mr. Bass you are a very large fellow. Your note range is quite large and impressive. I've heard you play several times over the years and I love how your tone can be low and sharp or high and mellow!

From start to finish I love this free verse poem. I never knew so much about bass until today. You told their story and made it into poetry. I wish you luck in the contest. Your artwork fits perfectly. Thank you for sharing that knowledge in such a clever way. Good luck!

A very well-written free verse poem about being the double bass in the orchestra able to produce the highest and lowest note that no other instrument are capable of doing.

JLR,
Very interesting post. *smile* I have a tendency to try to pick out the bass notes in songs as I listen - it comes from the year I spent in a band, myself. A silly time in my life, but fun.
I have to be perfectly honest and tell you this really read a bit more like an essay on bass music rather than a poem- especially after the first few lines. (Sorry.) Typically, free verse will have some poetic elements, too - alliteration, metaphor, simile, assonance and the like, etc.
This is more like a series of notes about the bass - where you find it, what it does - there aren't many poetic touches... like what it SAYS... in the mind - in the heart - you know? What is it about the bass that touches you rather than the --- piano or violin? Why is it special? Help us get into YOU. Make sense? Help us see PAST the wooden BOX of the musical instrument that you are describing into what makes it SING.
Other notes, if Imay?
1.)I am the largest and the lowest pitch(ed) instrument in the crowd.
2.) I thrill at the touch of, my musician who can bow my strings
with a wooden bow, strung ever so tightly with horsehair with care,
--> I thrill at the touch of my musician who can (bend/trill/other) my strings with a wooden bow, strung ever so tightly (and carefully) with horsehair...
Thanks for sharing. I did enjoy this, but I think an edit may make it even better. Good luck!

I'm afraid I have no talent at all for music, tho I do enjoy listening to it. I have the utmost respect for people who can play these instruments. People cover their ears and run if I touch one. I think it would be wonderful to be able to play and have people want to hear it.

Cindy , thank you for your review, but we are never to old to try our hand at music...

I used to play the E flat bass tuba and my teacher was always telling me to try to emulate the sound of the plucked string bass. I have a natural feeling of affinity for bass instruments, working away rhythmically in the background. Consequently I greatly enjoyed your free verse.

A thorough description of the Bass, made more interesting being told from the point of view of the instrument itself. An instrument that is often the heartbeat of a composition.
