Nice angle on this subject Yvette. Hopes and dreams get shattered for the greed and egos of countries' leaders. Our freedom depends on the strength of our fighting men to carry out orders against ego and provocation. I'm glad you wrote this tribute in hopes for the children not cope with the savages of war.
Hugs, Trisha

Thanx so much, Trisha, for stopping by on this one -- our Veterans' Day Parade was today and to see those older vets interacting with the kids/youth along the parade route was just a reminder where this inspiration came from! ;) Love to shake their hands and clap and watch them react: they deserve every smile we can give them and so much more! ;) :) Yvette

Although these verses seem quite laid back, there is still a powerful message in the words of the veteran talking to the children, one with a flag in his hand. You have to wonder whether it will ever end.

The first stanza of this poem seemed to be from a true veteran's point of view, with a very realistic conversational tone. I thought the rest of the poem seemed to be the veteran expressing a hope that the young children will not have a violence-marred life, just 'free from strife.' That is a lovely ending there. Not sure what to improve on.

That's neat. I used to work with customer service in a military-affiliated bank, and it's pulling on me again pretty strong today of all days.

Excellent poem for Veterans Day. The image says a lot about this man and his certainly great courage. The poem sums up by saying he doesn't want his children or anyone else have to suffer what the two previous generations suffered. Beautifully done. Thank you for sharing and good luck in the contest. Blessings. ~Brenda

Thank you Yvette, a memory is still an honor to be, for life moves in all directions and those before brought smiles to many faces by their sacrifice. Freedom is what we have because of men that served and waved the flag so other can still be free. The pain that we feel we wish it not to be, but war is hell and it takes many to fill the gaps of time. I'm sorry for your pain.

Awesome tribute for Veterans Day! I love how you started this with first person speaking the way you did! Quite a creative approach on this! Don't we all hope that one day there will be a generation who will know war no more :(. xoxo

Oh, Diana, THANK YOU!! ;) ;) Your wonderful review and those bright, shiny stars are so very appreciated -- just got in from our Veterans' Day parade and remembered why my muse must have whispered this idea to me: those vets are just so damn happy that folks are there... you can just see it on their faces not matter how young or old! You reach to shake their hand and just say a simple 'Thank you' and their hand squeezes tighter and their eyes brighten up... EVERYONE should be sure to do that, ya know? :) :) And watching them interact with the kids/youth along the route....yeah, priceless..... Take care out there! ;) :) Yvette

I how wonderful that you got to experience that incredible interaction. It is truly one of the greatest things that binds is. Neither race nor religion nor political party can separate the love and respect between a Vet and those they serve! :). xoxo

Bravo! An old soldier talks to children about war, sacrifice, and freedom, hoping they will live in a world where war no longer exists, and all are free to pursue their lives. Very poignant words. His message is simple but powerful... and it's for all of us. :)

Hello Yvette. It is a wonderful piece. The chronical of what he has gone through is a tribute to him. You describe many acts soldiers are required to fulfill. If they don't do them correctly, they and their comrades can be lost. Z

You're welcome. I was looking at the weapons qualifications of the "Brown Uniform" vet. Amazing.

I love that the essence of this poem is optimism for the future as this veteran says "please don't repeat-for peace entreat." And ending his wish for the world to be forever. Splendid!
