Excellent chapter, Tony. In the best tradition of the great spy novelists. Now that Helen has the letter what is she up to?

You do a fine job of letting the reader see Alain from the POV of jealous Charles.

And you threw in an iconic view of Paris.

Most enjoyable read.

Blessings Julia

Thanks for your continued encouragement, Julia, and for the sixth star. Glad you are still enjoying the various twists and turns in the story.
My time for writing and reviewing is pleasantly curtailed at present by the homecoming of a daughter and granddaughter. Hence my delayed response.
    All the best, Tony

Excellent.
An easy read with great information.
Enjoy the conflict and intrigue.
In the 8th paragraph from the end, (2CV)
I would change that to, grey Citroen, and
later (Citroen) to, The 2CV was a museum
piece.
Great job!!
Thank you.

So I wonder what game Helen is playing now.

I hesitate to even mention this but mention it I will. I feel sure it's acceptable. In the following 'I shrank back into the doorway of the museum, where I could still observe while scanning leaflets promoting the latest exhibition.' - the 'I could still observe' is bugging me. Is 'observe' a transitive verb or can it be either?

Best wishes
Judy

Thanks for your continued encouragement, Judy. I'm pretty sure that 'observe' can be used either transitively or intransitively. However, I'll look again at that paragraph. I did trim it when editing and might have overdone the cutting back.

What better way to have your writing curtailed? Enjoy your time away. :)

Ooh la-la. La belle Helene! Qui est-elle, vraiment?

when you come to think of it that is the fundamental question of this book. At least it seems so to me. She started out as an attractive woman and the attraction between her and Charles seemed believably mutual, but the machinations that have developed over the subsequent chapters (never mind the red herrings) have deepened the mystery.

i enjoyed this chapter very much.

Thanks for your continued encouragement, Jim, and for the sixth star. This relationship between Helen and Charles has become a more central focus than I'd originally intended.

I've read and enjoyed your latest - I think it's going well - but I haven't got around to reviewing it yet.
