I loved the "Duke" as well. In fact, my children named one of their horses after him. Thankfully, he lived when he did. Today, he would be greatly criticized for his "less than politically correct language". And yet, he is still a hero to so many.

Thanks for sharing.

Blessings
Janet

You name some great films and he certainly went down in history as a hero on the screen, his 'true grit' inspired many men to be strong! My father was a huge fan. A great tribute here and a syllable count would help with the meter, much enjoyed love Dolly x

Wow! Who would've guessed you're not a poet, Contestant? You sure write like one. The rhymes are excellent... I don't go crazy about meter, the poem's got flow.

It is very creative how you've woven the movie titles in this poem. I admire that a lot.

Overall, I think its excellent!

History of John Wayne is eventfully described along with your love for him. It is kind of poem that can make anyone fall in love with John Wayne. I loved it. Thank you very much for sharing.

I'm a HUGE John Wayne fan myself, as was my father, all of my uncles and a lot more members of our family.
Ironically my favorite John Wayne film isn't even a western, it's a Vietnam war movie titled The Green Beret.
You did a great job of incorporating the Duke's film titles into this.
Best wishes to you in the contest.

This is a very catchy rhyme. You did forget his war movies, maybe a sequel would be on the cards. I liked the picture as well. He also did an animal film. Good luck in the contest and thank you for sharing.

I didn't forget, the contest was westerns. Hatari was the animal film. Thank you for reading and reviewing my work.

As a fan of the Duke it is hard to find fault here. You have crafted a very clever rhyming poem and nailed so many of his great and not so great movies Sometimes the beauty of a poem is in its imperfections particularly when the message here is both a tribute and pure fun All the Best

Never mind the meter and rhyme - both of which are pretty good, by the way. This is a great biography of one of the most iconic figures in the history of Hollywood Westerns.

Love Duke and love the poem.It touched on many great Wayne highlights, and had some creative and clever rhymes (Red River/Shiver). He should have won an Oscar for his performance in The Searchers. "Injun will chase something til he figures he's chased it enough. Same when he runs. Seems he never gets it through his head that there's such a thing as a critter that'll just keep on coming on." Would have loved it if you'd mention one of my all-time favorite John Wayne roles in..."The Quiet Man". Not to mention "Sands of Iwo Jima" and "The Expendables". Thanks for the fun poem to a great American.

I would have mentioned all of them but it was a western poem contest, loved the Quiet Man and Sands of Iwo Jima too. Searchers is my All time favorite Duke movie, thank you for reading and reviewing my work.

There are so many other aspects to poetry than meter and rhyme, my favorite poet's tend to have no sense of these things either, so you are in good company from my perspective. And I've seen meter and rhyme in poems that were really chains that weighed down the writing, the poet seemingly unable to break free of them.

I enjoyed this poem, and the rhymes didn't feel forced because the story of this man is detailed, informative and takes precedent. I am not aware of him, but he sounds great and I will have a search on YouTube later. I love later Westerns, a great genre and peculiar to America. Tombstone is one of my favourites.

Nothing springs to mind for change, Joy.
