Thinking of old memories and reminding one of ones mother .memories one makes stay wth one forever and a day. Even when a loved one passes away.

Yes, you are so right...memories and old things are precious, I find myself keeping the oddest things that remind me of how my mother once was.

I like the images you describe in your poem, grey-haired dogs and hoarded books, just wonderful images that are comforting. Your theme is one, we all can relate to and you express it perfectly.

I've got a lot of my mother's books in my house now, and a couple of pieces of her father's furniture. Nostalgia abounds...

Funny, how in our youth of running and enjoying all that loveliness, we would reach for only the 'new' and the 'better'....with the only thing we realized about mom was that we were ready to be out of the house and away from the 'loveliness'. And now? Now we want the 'old' and the 'worn', the 'comfortable'....we want mom and the true 'loveliness' back. Such wonderful and moving words, Carol -- pulls at the reader to realize what was and what is -- makes them want to grab those shoes and run with you! :) Thank you for sharing! :) Yvette

Thanks so much, Yvette. My mom always was my best friend, even in high school. We did a lot of things together - old movies, a couple of college classes, shopping, etc. Now she's got Alz. Disease and doesn't seem to know me...I want her back!!
I know you understand :)

Sure wish I had a six for this masterpiece. It touches my soul. How do you know me so well? Are we all this way in our old age? The lines and phrases in here are priceless. You have amazing talent, Carol. Beautiful poem. :)

I admired the sensibility you captured in this free verse. The longing is loud and clear. Your "snores like prayers" is memorable, and your "old souls" reverberate. I hope rushing out doors this morning helped! Smiles- Joan

I enjoyed reading this verse, ciliverde. The term ...old soul.. draws me like a moth to a flame. I relate to shining eyes of wisdom that have walked through hardships and triumphs too. That is what I see in your verse... well done.

Thanks so much, Melissa. I think the idea of old souls and comfortable old things is something many of us can relate too. We all need comfort now, I believe...

Hello,
This is a beautiful free verse and very relatable.
I want a lot of those things too today and as you state, nothing new.
I want to take comfort in the familiar and the the things that make me feel safe.
I particularly enjoyed the warmth of verses 2&3 and the yearning in the phrase about your mother.
Thank you for sharing this. It's just what I needed to read today.
Kindest regards, Debra

Thank you so very much, Debra. I woke up feeling sad this morning (and I almost always hate new shoes). Thanks for the very kind review and comments,
Carol

You're very welcome and I do hope that your sadness has passed. :)

Hi Carol,
This is lovely :) I don't usually relate to free verse, but found myself nodding my head in agreement with each line. I can relate to wanting grey hair dogs around. My pups are four years old, so no grey hair there yet. I'm the one with grey hair and arthritic issues.

Lol, my oldest dog is 12 and the youngest just over 2-ish. They are all rescues so I'm not sure about ages of any of them (four total). Thanks so much for reading,
Carol

This is soul sparingly beautiful and so sad. And if I could wave a magic wand, for writing such beautiful free verse I would make sure you got all those things you crave.

Oh thank you, my friend. It's been a tough year so far, as you know. Recent times have been particularly difficult, I'll let you know via text.
