Being a Christian and belonging to a grace believing fellowship, I can see the dilemma of the Pastor, but also I can deeply understand parental love, having children and grandchildren. But I don't see how you could be blamed for supporting your son. It's very confronting, but you're right, one sin is no greater than another, and Christ died to cover all sin, it's not the orientation that's the problem, it's the same as sex before the covenant of marriage, because the act joins us to the other person, in fact marriage was the consummation, but the promise was the betrothal, as Christ is betrothed to the church. The marriage will be when Christ comes for His bride. Earth is supposed to reflect what's happening in Heaven. Same sex marriage is a raging political issue in this country, as it probably is there. But I am glad your faith in God remains intact, you are my sister in Christ. Well done, Patty, blessings, Roy

Patty I will never judge anyone on their religious, political or sexual beliefs. I will always respect ones beliefs even if I didn't agree. It's not our right to question these. I really appreciate you sharing your honesty and your heart on your sleeve I am sure he is happy within himself and no one has the authority to change ones hopes, dreams or aspirations in their life. They can only be guided.
Thanks for sharing this story with us.

I applaud you for supporting your son. I belong to an Episcopal Church where Gays and Lesbians are accepted and participate in church roles and activities. Throughout the years I have worked with many gay and lesbian staff in the nursing field and many of these individuals I see as my own children. God does love everyone, and many forget that does mean everyone.

Patty, this is well written. I know there had to be a heartache to you about your son, but for others to not want to be a friend here on fanstory because of the story, would be even more heart breaking. I for one will continue to be your friend. Patricia

As a teacher in not just high school, but for a while grade 3, it's so clear to me that sexual preference is born into a person. I picked out eight-year-olds who would be gay, and I was right every time. It shows. So it's not something you can "fix" and doesn't need to be fixed. Be happy if your son finds a partner for life. Marriages fail half the time between men and women. Are the odds any better or worse for a gay couple? I know one, and they seem very happy after 25+ years.
I wish you and your family the very best. Thank you for having the courage to share this story. :)

Your handling of the situation you find yourself in is admirable. I can't imagine what I would do if it happened in my family. I would remain Catholic but may find it better to find another Catholic church.
You seem to have the right approach as indicated by your heartfelt story.

Patty, Thank you for writing this my friend. We, too, have a gay son that we love very much. He is still a great person in our eyes. There are some that judge, but as you said we are not supposed to judge. We do not sit high enough to judge, only God can judge. It is a scary thing when people try to judge. Very good and interesting story about your precious son. I wish him well in all he does! love, Teri

You're right. Trying to 'fix' him would only have added to his pain, and yours. In my job as a homecare nurse, I've met many people, and nobody has ever told me they chose their sexual orientation. It's the way they're made, and I can't believe in a God who would make a person gay and then condemn them for it. Your son is perfect just the way he is.

Thanks for sharing your honest story, Patty. I'm sure your old church friends have since had to address their views on homosexuality any number of times. I agree with you that even when Jesus addressed the sin of adultery, he redefined the sin to mean even just thinking adulterous thoughts made it sin. So no one is sinless and you're right the only way to Heaven is through faith in Christ. So the ultimate unforgivable sin is unbelief itself, along with pride and hypocrisy etc.
That said, there are some pretty clear passages about homosexuality in Scripture because it was a pretty common practice among the Roman elite where the rich old guy takes a young boy. Today we still are against sexual abuse of minors. In those days, it was accepted. But since so many of our gifted celebrities are gay, and they have a powerful influence, who can say we won't go back to Roman ways?
Anyway, I appreciate your sharing your story because many believers experienced the same. But the way the church treated you was wrong. I hope you can forgive them. But as one mom to another, let's pray for strength for our kids and not fight their battles for them. It weakens them if we do.

I agree with everything you've written here and I can't understand the attitude of those religious people. Fortunately not all priests are the same.
I'm glad you decided to support your son, not all gay people are so lucky. Some parents are quite horrible.
Thanks for sharing and good luck in the contest.
