"John broke up with me twelve days before our wedding. He looked around, after the deed, just long enough to run back and scoop up the engagement ring. I had thrown it at him and into Mom and Dad's front yard." ... Well, if this doesn't set the scene well enough to draw potential readers into the telling of your story, I don't know what would've...

He loved us, but had no time for us. Never did he take his son golfing; yet a membership to a country club assured him of a tee time every Saturday morning with his associates. Our daughter struggled with Borderline Personality Disorder. She worshipped her Dad. He just never thought to do things like take her on a lunch date. If I offered suggestions, he resented me. Did he love them? Oh, yes, without a doubt. He just had no clue how to express loving feelings for any of us. ... Sounds like a "Cats In The Cradle" kind'a story, Anonymous Author:
"When you comin' home, Dad?
I don't know when
But we'll be together then, son,
You know we'll have a good time then..."
~ Harry Chapin

Then, after a few weeks, every time he called or stopped by to talk over some legal problem, he sounded miserable. He had lost a lot of weight (and claimed he had adopted a healthier lifestyle). He finally took my advice and went to see our doctor.

The tests began.

He had stage-four pancreatic cancer.
... The Lord works in mysterious ways, doesn't He? At least that's what I have always been told.
Look, I'm sure this is gonna sound cold, cruel and callous to you, but you if "play", then you're gonna "pay." BIG TIME!
My wife left me in much the same manner, only we were just married for 22 years. I think "devastating" is a very appropriate word to use in such an instance...

I loved him and love him still. But I don't have any idea who he was. ... We--the loving, loyal and faithful partners in long-term relationships are always the last to know and get screwed.
And not in the way we'd like to be "screwed", either.

Good story. I hope (and pray!) that everything works out in your favor...

When I read the contest was about the fight of your life, my thought went to fight as argument. So it was interesting to read a story based on fight as struggle. And it was a very long and difficult fight. It made quite an impression, especially since it's non fiction. Sometimes, when things start going wrong, the troubles just keep coming like an avalanche. It takes a really strong person to go though it without falling into pieces.
Thank you for sharing!

Wow, you sure picked a couple of crazies. At least you have your kids so you're not totally alone. He got what he deserved in the end... dying a miserable death instead of being with his precious Sue. I'm glad he suffered. I'm not as forgiving as you might be.

What a heart-breaking story. The 'woman' Sue, she should be ashamed of herself. Did the divorce go through? Surely if it did, she would be responsible for his debts, she had his money. There is too much of this sort of thing happening, the law should be changed to protect the wife that was cheated on and lied to. This is an excellent story for the contest, I hope you win this one, at least!!! Good luck! xsx Sandra

This is the stuff you see in the movies and hope is only fiction. But unfortunately it does happen in peoples' lives for real. It pains my heart to read of such abuse of love and trust. There is nothing worse than having to find out the ugly truth after someone has left this earth, the pain and hurt and no closure, just a mess to clean up. My heart goes out to the faithful woman in the story.
Good luck to you in the contest.

having waited for him for forty-three years

And therein lies the problem. You were waiting for him, but he was waiting for someone else.

A very sad but we'll written story that caught my attention. You have a way of putting a lot of your emotions into your writing, well done.

WoW That sucks big time. I admire anyone who would be willing to take of someone who betrayed that much. A bigger person than myself. My divorce was the best thing that happened to me. He married the woman he was running with and they have made each other miserable for the last 26 years, Be careful what u wish for you just may get it. I couldn't have wished anything worse then what he has. Karma's a bitch. Great story. Mary

What a story indeed. It made me think of Prince Charles and Camila. He didn't get to marry her when he was young and the two cheated on their spouses together and then ended up married in the end.

So the story is definitely believable--in this case, it is a more compelling story with the narrator being very honest with the events and her reactions. Strong narration.

Well written. Some minor fixes to improve readability.

(the) capability
have him(back)
She couldn't handle the situation and had enough of it. - Then you don't have the double had.

There is so much tragedy here. I admire that you can love him; so many would be so clouded with resentment that it would eat at them.
