Hi Nicole,
We lived in San Antonio for eighteen years. We've taken the kids to Sea World many many times. I'd be really sad to see it closed. :(
I don't watch the news so I've no idea why they closed it, though I'm sure I can guess.
Everyone has to put their two cents into things that doesn't concern them...
I've no idea why, but they do. I have no idea why they feel they must 'save' things that have no need of salvation.
Anyway, your prose piece is well written and heart breaking... and yeah, I'm really disappointed in humanity (or the lack of) on a daily basis, which is why I try not to watch the news, quite honestly. :(
thanks for writing and raising awareness.

We have a place here in FL called Mote Marine. It cares for injured turtles, dolphins and such. It has some that are kept because of injuries making it impossible for them to return to the wild. We have a similar Pelican Sanctuary for birds.
I know that my children learned to appreciate wild life by touring these facilities, so I understand your point and agree that if there is no mistreatment the SeaWorld facilities should be allowed to remain open so that people who would otherwise never experience dolphin, killer whale, etc. can learn to appreciate them, not pollute the oceans and be against hunting them.

Thanks, Ellen. Sanctuaries like you mention provide important aspects of social education and stimulate interest.
Out of sight = out of mind.
The 'wild' world is becoming smaller daily. I think there are about 2000 tigers left in India.
If nature is to survive, we must learn to co-habit. Mistakes will be made, but we can learn from them and make improvements.
Banning everything to do with animals is short-sighted. They won't survive on their own.

Thank you for speaking up. PLEASE continue to do so. I agree with your comments and I am proud that you wrote a piece that is respectful but pointing out the realities of the actions taken. You will have others believe you to be narrow minded and cruel to animals but the fact of the matter is they're many people who do not have a clue but because a celebrity said it was true they believe it. :(. Thank you again for sharing this with us. Kat
