What could be better when you go into the unknown - joining the airforce - along with your buddies. Sounds as if you were quite a trio. At least you saw some of the world outside of Texas, where your friend stayed.
Been to San Antonio a few times - was there last April after our grand-daighter's wedding in Texas.
Indent >>>>The three of us fancied
a beautiful young lady BY the name of Betty
Most enjoyable, Jay - bring on the next part.

Thanks, Margaret, for reading. I'm so pleased you enjoyed it. I'll take care of that indent thing. The other was intentional. I've seen it written many times without the "by" (mostly by first person narrated hardboiled mystery types). I usually do it when I try to make my voice casual. I'll keep it in mind to rethink that.

This is a good read and very well written. I had finished reading before I'd even realised. I wish I had a six but have to be content with five. I'm looking forward to reading on. All the best. Ulla

Thank you, Ulla. Don't worry about the six. This late in the week I didn't really expect any. I appreciate your reading and enjoying it.

Wow... this is entertaining and interesting that I want to continue reading.
Well written (of course) in a way that hooks the reader from the start.
In the manner its presented also helped with the reading.
Nicely done. John

A fascinating autobiographical account. It looks pretty much as if your services operate much the same as ours. Breaking old relationships apart. Now I wonder what part Betty will play in all of this. It's well written (I wouldn't expect it to be otherwise) and keeps one turning the pages, metaphorically of course because you don't on a computer.

I'm so pleased you enjoyed this. I'll be posting the next segment next week. They're short, which accounts for the large number of responders I'm getting.

I like the beginning of this story but I want to read the rest of it right now. Can you tell I'm impatient at times? You did a great job at holding my interest. Shirley

You served only four years? At least you got to travel overseas, not a good thing to be doing now, however. How much money did you actually have? :)

I have no idea how much money we had. I know my dad gave me (I believe) twenty bucks and, knowing Marty, his folks gave him some as well. Then with the sandwiches and eggs. Oh and I had another source of income I'll get into next couple of posts.

Although coming into this late, I got a great kick out of it. I love your train of thought, a lot like mine, a leads to be and occasionally then do d and so on. I liked this section: I often snickered to each other the suggestion that O'Dwyer would've loved to have taken any one of us into that closet...I anticipated you would say something about O'Dwyer's book in the closet, but this caught me off guard and gave me a good laugh. I look forward to the next post.

You know, it just dawned on me, I should be using pseudonyms. Although he'd be in his eighty's now, so ... well, what's done's done. Anyway, thanks for reading. I'm glad you got a kick out of it. I'll be posting part two next week.

Loved this article you wrote, very classically a recollection and biographical account of reflective youthful paths, displays the way youth plays out, chaos and confusion, I nearly joined the military in my teens, I failed to make the cut, but my friend served for 12 years, my life continued in comic form most, me taking wrong paths, blundering through life, and God seemingly making some sort of order out of it, yours doesn't sound much different! Well done, Jay, it was like looking in a mirror, good scribing, blessings, Roy.

From your autobiographical account I read here from some source, God took you by the collar and gave you a good shake. You came back from places that, thank the good Lord, I'd never been -- or if I visited there, I got out soon enough. Your trials were much more noteworthy.

Thank you Jay, your observations promote you. And if it wasn't for God, my life would be disastrous, I owe Him big time. Perceptive sod aren't you? It's great knowing you Jay, Roy.

This is a delightfully told story that just rolls off the pen of the writer, like an enthusiastic friend telling you a story over coffee. The reader is glued to the narrator eagerly awaiting the next bit; "tell me, tell me. !!" Can't wait to hear more.

You couldn't compliment a writer more than to say that. Sometimes the hardest things to write are what seem so casual and conversational.
