At least I know, with a little bribery, people on this sight will read my work, or at least pretend to read, but then I suppose, through the filter of their understanding! I really enjoyed your work here Jay, as I always do, the verbal entertainer's cap is always on and your work is always filled with anecdotes, like the son's touching story, you are thoughtful parents, and that I really like, I was engaged in its wisdom speak all through, blessings, my friend, Roy.

As always, Roy, thank you for your encouraging and kind words. A lot of people read your poetry, Roy. You are one of the premier poets on this site. Always inspiring. God Bless!

I was so caught up and enraged by the story of the rip-off on the movie card. Had your son told you, I bet you would have gone to great lengths to find out what happened and not spare any words either. Well, at least that's what my hubby would do. He gets furious about things like that.
As for your story, it made me think of the days I go into our modern library to find children in line waiting to check out books. Adults too, of course. Reading is still alive and well in my little hick town. Beautiful writing style as usual.

Thank you, Shari. I'm learning more and more what your hubby would do. I think he'd scare the crap outta me. But I know in this case I bought the gift card. They always give a receipt that shows the amount on the card. Evidently I didn't look at it. I mean, what could go wrong? So I'm sure it got crumpled up and thrown away. What was so sad was that David wasn't even going to tell us. Happily, Joe finked on him. It was an embarrassment, anyway.

Good essay on "pablum ingestors" and our culture loosing the ability for people to think on their own. You wove a story about a gift card into a larger story about our culture. I, too, have known writers who quite because they feel "What's the bloody use in writing! Who will be there to read it, anyway?"

Closing paragraph reminded me of my monthly trips to the library to save money by borrowing books instead of buying. Thank you for celebrating "this army."

Thank you, Andre, for reading and enjoying this story. I can imagine this would have yielded itself well to an oral presentation. But I don't have the memory you have. And God! I would faint from sheer terror.

You do go around the horn to get to the point, but I loved it. It was entertaining and hit home with all of us who have dealt with the likes of the uncaring ticket taker. It's an encouraging piece for writers who live in hope that our words will fall on willing ears.
Compliments on the long sentence beginning, "And I am being swept...." It literally swept this reader into the rush to save the sliding books.

Nit picking: Did you mean "...almighty slippery" or "...almighty, slippery"? Also, squams sent me to the unabridged...seems strange here. So, teach me.

Thanks hugely for the six stars, June. I added a comma after "almighty", which makes like six uninterrupted commas.
"squamous" is the cancer cells. "Squam" is the noun form of a word that means "made up by the author because is seems to go well with "squiggly". I was hoping it would be so well-known by now it would show in the dictionary. I like it though. It's fun. Thanks again for your close read, June.

Oh, I knew about the cancerous thing, and it's in the dictionary, referring to something scaly. Also, a combing form. For your usage, I wasn't sure if I was uninformed or if you were taking a little liberty. And why not? I just wanted to be sure to attribute it to you if you were being creative. I'm sure your definition will appear in the next Webster's edition.

sometimes complex sentences. (how very true)

the squiggles and squams of punctuation still function, words, almighty slippery, wriggling, palpitating words, still have meaning

A very good story. I love the line above. Congrats on winning the reviewer contest. It is well deserved, My friend~Debbie

This is yet another interesting post that the author has created with this piece of work. I am sorry to hear about that gift card. 50 cents instead of 50 Dollars must have been a big shock indeed. Well done.

Great post, Jay. I am always paranoid about gift cards...and now I know why...how do I know they put the correct amount on the cards!!
I also liked the library scene. I was so pleasantly surprised last year when I went to our local library to tutor a young man and it was full of children sitting around reading. Loved it. 8-)

into the mystery world inside the whispering walls. - oh heaven!! We are saved.

How long ago was this? Are more people returning to the library - I hope so. My hubby and I fancy the younger generation are one of video games and ipods and don't know what a library is let alone what it contains. And as for books - it seems half the population plus read from kindles.

Put in a bed, a radio and microwave, and I could happily live in a library... please.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, Jay.

Margaret

I think Libraries must go the way of Starbucks though to survive. They must allow one to eat and drink there while reading. If they only knew how much extra money they'd make by having a little coffee shop inside.

Hello Jay
I'm going to say it again
You have the blessed gift of knowin how to get a readers attention--
first about the fifty dollar movie gift card ending up to only worth fifty cents

Then you bring us to your thoughts about children learning to read. Jay this part really drew my attention.

How one can find a friend, a confederate, a confidant, here--here in this book, taken from that shelf within the whispering walls of the Library.

That sounds like me -- the library was my best pal how to learn.

Gert
