I wonder if this comedic genius had any idea how much he meant to so many people on a deep personal level. I have heard stories like yours all day, from people who are not his family and close friends, but people who invited him into their lives in intimate ways. You express so well how much he meant to you. What a terrible disease this has to be for him to end his life despite the many many blessings of his life. Brooke

I would guess that when alone, he felt like a fraud. It may have been brilliant work to the rest of us, but I think he felt he wasn't good enough for himself.

Brilliant. I don't have any sixes let, so just take a bucketful of admiration for a marvelous look at this remarkable man.
I'm incredibly saddened by his death. I always got the impression that he was balancing on a knife edge. That came through in every part he played - serious or otherwise.
Humour is often used as a mask.
Believe me, I know. ;)
I feel so sorry for his family. Who of those, remaining, cannot help but feel some responsibility for his death? Guilt, the 'what if's' and the 'if only's'.
It's tragic.
Well written, my friend.

Thanks, it really was a wave of sadness. Sent it to the Tribune.

On the Today Show today, Meryl Streep, when asked her reaction to the passing of Robin Williams, said (and I'm paraphrasing) "It's like when an unstoppable object just stops."
When Jerry Lewis calls Robin Williams the greatest comedic genius who ever lived, that kind of says it all.
Thank you for adding your unique slant to it.
Addicts know no other existence other than one filled with pain. [Probably better to toss the first "other"]

Thanks for sharing this wonderful tribute to Robin Williams.
Hearing of his passing, literally floored me.
I have always loved all of his works. And, knowing he wasn't much older than myself ... well, what can I say? With the love and respect I had for him, and discovering that his problems overcame him -- his demise really hit close to home.
R.I.P. Robin. You will be sorry missed!

Thanks for sharing the moment with me.

Gentle, magnificent words filled with beauty and sorrow for the late Robin Williams. When I came home and heard about his death, I gasped. I literally gasped and my stomach dropped. Robin Williams was the last person I expected to be associated with suicide. I realized he struggled but from the last interviews it appeared that he was on the path of getting well. The pain festering inside him burst opened yesterday and this time he couldn't find a patch to seal it up. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this tragic event.

Well done Ingrid. He was a disturbed individual.
Most comedians are. They laugh to keep from crying.
The press loves to dramatise situations and I hardly believe their gibberish anymore. He may have forgot he took his pills
and overdosed. He deserves the benefit of the doubt. Good job. Nancy

Somehow I don't think so, I really don't. I say not to malign the man, but I have a sense of connection that tells me he had just had enough. Thanks for the read.
Hey! You're winning a lot of contests...congrats.

So beautifully written and insightful. Is there anywhere you could send this quickly to have a larger audience? It is a marvelous tribute and not the kind the media will be producing over the next several days. Wonderful piece of work, Spiritual Echo.

Thank you. It was a heartfelt write, full of regrets.

Thoughtful message well written. Being a fan, I too knew the DJ scenes in Good Morning Vietnam were unscripted and that was probably the thing that first drew me to Robin's talents. How many more great comedians are affected by the same demons? They walk a fine line between greatness and madness. A sad loss.

Sure, even the shrinks who are paid the big bucks agree that depression is anger turned inside out.

I give you a six for this honest and heartfelt tribute.
No not exactly a tribute, more of an explanation of
a mental illness more deadly then cancer. For in reality, there is no cure. For Robin, there was no punch line. No laughter at the end of the joke.

He was a comedic genius. From his early TV days to Mrs. Doubtfire to RV (yes, I enjoyed that). Others in-between as well.
They self-medicate to stop their emotions from consuming them -- You nailed that one.
personality that shot him to fame, destroyed him -- 'also' might read better than a comma there.
But few people know that none of those scenes were scripted -- I remember hearing and reading he was a master of improv.
Larry King asking Robin Williams if he found the sobering experience of Rehab had destroyed his humour -- Potentially a lethal question.

And truthfully, haven't you found that a bottle of wine or vodka on your desk opens up the channels and lets your imagination run loose? Guilty as charged your honour. And yes, I've been diagnosed--I've walked the walk.
