Vivid description of this gathering and effective depiction of Marguerite's reaction to Hitler and the concept of celebrating the man
Howl with the wolves - a powerful warning her husband issues
You depict well the way fear is used to intimidate people into behaving in ways contrary to their true beliefs

I went on my first missions trip to Germany just before the East Berlin wall came down. I had read about the war but it was just a story. It became very real to me while I was there. God loves you and so do I.

A non-writer friend recommended a book to me. So I reluctantly gave 'Shade of Vampire' a shot. I got a couple chapters in, but I couldn't turn off my reviewer self. The romance part seemed decent, so I'll try again. But my problem is this: the author constantly used 'it was'. Sounds stupid, but now, when I see those two little words, they annoy me. Maybe because Vampire lady beat me over the head with them almost every paragraph.(No joke.) And don't even get me started on her use of 'that'!!

So I'm going to make this suggestion, but not because you overuse 'it was'. (I firmly lay the blame at Vampire lady's feet. LOL)

"The festival for Chancellor Hitler's fiftieth birthday packed the square."

I enjoyed reading this, and I think you've done a great job of showing us the second side of the German story. Best not to judge a person without knowing their heart.

I found an useful article. I don't know if you're much for research, but I'll pass it along.

Thanks. I will happily take all of the help I can get. I have done the same thing myself. I critique every book and now I can't seem to get through many. Thanks again, Gretchen

Thank you for the moving review. My mother couldn't watch him on television years later. He was quite the nasty monster. Gretchen

Howl with the wolves or be slaughtered with the lambs. What a marvelous phrase. It stuck in my head immediately.
This scene was chilling, especially, when the officers took the old man from the crowd.
You definitely captured Marguerite's hate and Han's contagious fear of Hitler.

Such a sad story. Your story kept the reader interested right from the beginning.

How many people in foreign lands today, because they are not free, cheer for their less than desirable leaders just to save their lives. Thank you for sharing.

Very well done story of what could very well have happened back in those dreadful times in Germany. Hitler was a total maniac, but it did take the majority of Germans awhile to figure this out. War World I was too punitive on the Germans, allowing Hitler to rise to power. Great job with the story.

Marvelous! Howl with the wolves is a perfect metaphor here, for Hitler and his crew were just that. Poor Hans, trying so desperately to convince his wife to fake it. Seeing the man arrested for his act of defiance did make her howl, but for the future.

I don't suppose you could decline an invitation from Hitler. I can believe his own people were afraid of him. They weren't stupid, and they would have all heard stories of what happened to anyone who defied him. I've heard that the people closest to him made several attempts on his life.

I was not alive back then but if we don't watch it the same thing will happen here. We need to keep this sort of thing in mind so that it does not happen to us who are living in the 21st century. Good read and keep up the good work.
