It's mind boggling, isn't it? Our priorities are so skewed, it seems,in our western culture. No child in North America should be lacking in the necessities of life, whether through genuine poverty or irresponsible parenting.
Unfortunately, dear Barbara, we need a license to drive a car, but absolutely no credentials to be a parent.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and how strange that the lamb was missing.
Hugs,

Thank you for understanding. We still haven't found the lamb.

Amen and amen Barbara! Your most profound message here speaks volumes of an extremely sad and ongoing reality that brings shame (or should) upon this once erstwhile nation...and I can only blame selfishness for its existence!
I could go on and on about this topic but will spare you, so I'll just say thank you again for writing and sharing this perfectly worded commentary!

Hi, barb. I think the facts speak for themselves and you are a wonderful person to bring it to the attention of the membership. I certainly was not aware it was that bad and that many children involved. Try to have a wonderful Holiday Season. Merry Christmas! X0 Bob

Oh Barbara......you are so sweet to help your students. What a blessing you are to them....what a difference teachers like you make. There is a teacher who teaches his kids to garden. They have started businesses they provide vegetables for their school lunches . Well done
God bless
Merry Christmas

A very sad, but heart-warming story. I enjoyed reading it immensely. You are in the midst of such sad stuff being a teacher in this situation, so I commiserate with you. At least, you care, unlike so many others. You are right about the USA-I used to live there and I know exactly what you mean about it not being right for the richest country in the world to have so much poverty and homelessness. Hopefully, it will make people think at this holiday season. Well-written. Faye

This story is sad but true. One of the very best parts of Christmas was the times I spent taking my little ones to the mall and watching them choose names on the Christmas tree from the salvation army. We always bought everything on the wish list, had it wrapped and then put the little hanger on the tree. I always hoped those children had something to look forward to at least one day that year. Sometimes we forget that it is better to give than to receive. Children are suffering round the world, but we should be paying more attention to our own. Thanks so much for sharing. Merry Christmas.

Thank you for reminding all of us about the small victims this time of year. As a retired teacher from a district with high unemployment, crime, and hopelessness, I understand. We do what we can. Though many programs try their best, so many are missed. Thank you for all you do. You may never get deserved thank you's, all those children will remember.

Well, Barbara, this message certainly pulls on one's heart strings, because the fact of the matter is that it's so true, shocking to say the least. The issue of why falls back into the laps of all of us where the family unit has deteriorated, along with the morals we now practice, or allow to happen without challenge. Greed has replaced reverence and respect.
This was a most appropriate post for the season ... and throughout the year. We all need to wake up before it's too late.

Perhaps if there were more people with similar values to your own, Barbra, things might be different. Unfortunately, there are many more like Gordon Gecko instead. Greed is the evil that prevents many from showing compassion towards those who are less fortunate than themslves. Still, you have to persevere. What else is there to do? Our future is with the children. They must be taught, and good example can work wonders. I can't say, I enjoyed your post, but it is well written, addresses a massive issue, and needs to be said. Thank you for sharing this with me, and thank you for your caring, christian oulook on life. Stick with it.

I know this won't help much, Barbara, but it sounds like you're doing what you can. You're making a difference.
As you say, there are no answers to the 'why'.
I know little about your background, but I'm wondering if these are Native American children?
In any case, I feel for them ... and you.
Peace, Lee

Thank you for understanding. They are not Native American, although a year ago, I did have some. Most of these children are Black and the others are Hispanic with a few White. I teach in TX.
