From the first time I met Rabbit and Virge on Fanstory, I fell in love with the characters. This is by far one of my favorite stories. Please let it become a published work so many others can enjoy it. You write from your heart and it comes through so well. Loved this chapter. I felt sad at seeing such a character leave us, but as was said, he had a pretty good ride.

A super, well structured segment. It's enough to bring a tear to these crusty old eyes. You show us innocence through Rabbit and wisdom, to. I wish I had invented him.

Just great writing! I'm smiling with tears in my eyes. Would sure like to see the finished book. Rabbit has so much innocent wisdom. A believable young man. The characters are real to me. A good read!

I'm sure I would have like Old Virge. I was born in 1927 and had my very own Nanny. She was a wonderful lady. We had a whole family of color. My great-gandparents owned slaves. They treated their slaves good. When they were freed many came and asked my grandfather to protect them. Good story. God loves you and I do too.

Loved this!..."Awake, awake, the dawn is here, the air is full of atmosphere." :)
How lovely... "He didn't look any different to me than he did when I was your age. He's been old forever. He's had a pretty good ride."
Interesting...I was even more confused when I found out that my grandparents paid for Virge's hospital stay and for his funeral. I don't know.
Got a chuckle here:..."Just know that old Virge will be there before you. He'll be waiting for you." "Yes Sir, I reckon he will be, and I'll be glad to see him. I've got to tell you though, I ain't in no hurry." :)
A lovely, lovely ending...Just know that old Virge will be there before you. He'll be waiting for you." "Yes Sir, I reckon he will be, and I'll be glad to see him. I've got to tell you though, I ain't in no hurry."
Wonderful!

Easily the most moving of you chapters, Bill, as it should be. I really like the touch at the end when admit
having lost his knife. If there's an element of truth in that, it must bother you still.
Well done, my friend.
Peace, Lee
you batted your eyes? You little devil, you!
In this context Bill, I think it should be 'We sat there for a while...' (not awhile).
'No, sir, I don'tneed to do that.'

What a fabulous chapter.
I'm sad that you lost the knife, though.
What a lovable character Virge was.
I've really enjoyed this story, bh.

Yes, virge seemed like a nice person.
And it was unfortunate that he would
have to die like that. But I guess when
its your time to go, there's no cheating.
You write very well. Keep writing.

Oh, this is so very touching - it felt like Virge and Rabbit and I were pals as I read this, and the whole thing is so authentic! You have written something very special here, in my opinion. I wouldn't change a word.

Thank you for your kind and generous feedback. This is written as fiction, but very much based on fact. I've compressed a lot into a summer, etc., but Virge is based on a true character and of course, Rabbit is near and dear. Bill

It was entirely my pleasure - one of the most wonderful stories I've read on this site (and I loved your story about Jay as well - you write with such heart, Bill - a true talent).
