I'm continuing to enjoy the story of Rabbit's summer.
That was a great parable of wisdom Virge created out of poor Ernest's demise.
A great read. Coming back for more, for sure!

Thanks for reading and for the spot! Both are appreciated. Bill

I think I'm falling in love with this story. The connection between Virge and Rabbit is so appealing. The old man seems to have taken Rabbit under his wing and teaches him about life with the kind of examples that are easy for Rabbit to understand. Another great chapter.

Jesse Owens did not get on Hitler's good side.He outperformed all of the Aryans he was pitted against. Before Hitler, the Blacks and Jews had a rough row to hoe. This is very well written.

We had rabbits, chickings and ducks. Mother assign me the ducks. You're welcome Bill. Charlie

Another great chapter.
The relationship between Virgil and Rabbit is so endearing.
The lesson itself was well observed and I could conjure the scene so clearly. Poor pecked Virgil and how guilty Rabbit must have felt in that moment of discovery.
Great post.

How often do humans say things or do things because somebody is different? It happens hourly or more often. Look at the wars we are in now. I enjoyed reading your post. Virge is a smart man.

Barbara - thank you for reading. As you know, I've posted as fiction, but this is all very real to me. Virge was perhaps not a smart man in the conventional sense, but all sorts of wisdom. Always warm regards, Bill

Excellent, Bhogg. I used to take care of chickens when I was Rabbit's age. I thought the same things Rabbit thought about chickens. I always wondered way a group of chickens would gang up on one chicken, too. I could really identify with this chapter. This was very well done. It makes me wish there was a Virge around to talk to me like he did to Rabbit.
Thank you for sharing this with us.

Thank you April for your very special review. Some people have asked if chickens were really as I described. I may need to use you as reference. Very warm regards, Bill

bhogg,
This is another interesting and engaging chapter about Rabbit's time on the farm and the lessons he learned. Chickens really are cannibalistic and will kill another as in the story. They will peck until blood is drawn, and they will just keep pecking until they get their fill of the carcass.
The story is written well and is easy and fun to read. Ole Virge just has a special way of explaining things.

This would be excellent in a youth Sunday School paper, Many churches have weekly ones. Go example and lesson. I wish I had a 6 for this. God loves you and so do I.

What a kind thing to say! Thanks for reading. The whole novel is really based on lessons learned during a summer in one boys life. Regards, Bill

Loved reading this bit, even though I didn't have the background of the other chapters! It kept me engaged throughout. Easy, smooth writing, with the dialogue especially down-to-earth and engaging. We start talking about chickens and very naturally ended up looking at all mankind, not necessarily an easy transition to make, but you pulled it off. I had to read the sentence starting "so like Virge" a few times before those first three words made sense. Maybe it needs a comma after "so"? "...have to do with Ernest" should have a question mark. Thanks for a great read!

"The nature of the beast". I loved your story. Was the purple liquid called gentian violet? I remember the old people used it for all wounds. I can't see any spags. Beautifully written.
Well done
Cheers
