Hi, Carol, I think it is a good idea to write it down. At least you will have a written account, and at least writing is not hard work for you, far, far easier than the work you've described here in this story. I do hope by the next part everything will be better. You've written your experiences clearly and without being dramatic, which is good for you in this situation.

    Belinda,

Drama...that seemed like the key word of late, but the stage crew keeps changing so fast I can't find time to kick and scream at anyone...Thanks for the kind thoughts. Carol

Wow! You poor thing. No wonder you haven't been on FanStory. And I was feeling sorry for myself because I had a four month house guest who lay on my sofa and watched TV all day but when I wanted to get on the computer, she wanted to talk non-stop. I'm glad you decided to write about your nightmare. I don't dare write about mine. Great post. Now I'll go check out the second part.

Hullo Carol ...

Oh dear - you have all my sympathy and I could just about be there with you, sharing your feeling of hopelessness as you found what a mess had been made in your lovely big home.
There are just two small changes to recommend ...

* You have - I wasn't happening! I think you mean -
It wasn't happening!
* You have - Having been raised to believe that one (singular) can achieve anything they (plural) set their minds on ... I suggest - to believe that we can achieve anything we set our minds to ....

I look forward to Part 2, wondering what could be even worse than what you had already discovered.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Love from ..... Nanette Mary.

lol- Well, I did this backward- reading part 2 first! But I got the whole, wonderful (horrible) story and applaud you for writing this woeful tale of revamping a home that relatives have destroyed. Know what you mean about it being 'different' when you find yourself older- remembering when it used to be a fun thing! Thanks so much for sharing. Betty

I fully understand. I have discovered no matter how bad things are, they can always get worse and not only can they get worse, they will.

This work has reached the exceptional level

Relatives aka renters are sometime the worst. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for an easy read. There is very good imagery.

I feel your pain! And you say things get worse than this? I just can't imagine. You write this in a very frank manner which puts your readers on your side immediately. Your ideas are well organized and written in clear English (nothing to puzzle over). I'm looking forward to reading your next part. I do hope things have since turned around for you.

Carol,
your non-fiction story is very well written. You and Lola both are my favorite short story or continuous story authors who don't generally do books. I loved the narrative in this installment. Here are the paragraphs that stood out for me:
Have you ever had a bad day and wondered what else can go wrong? Well, dear friends and readers, in the past few weeks I have discovered the answer to that question. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the only word suited is - Plenty!
My "honey" was providing us a comfortable living, our savings account had a few dollars, and I would soon eligible for social security. Considering all the facts, we made a joint decision - with a few minor adjustments, our life style wouldn't change much. Hindsight proved that to be a huge fallacy.
fter the house was empty of delinquent renters, I stood alone on the front walkway, staring at the old homestead. So many memories, good times, happy times, flooded my mind, followed by a torrent of tears. The once beautiful flower gardens were filled with two-foot high weeds, only a few blades of grass dotted the sun-baked dirt, and a forest of spindly saplings sprouted everywhere.
Having been raised to believe that one can achieve anything they set their minds on, I pushed all troubling thoughts aside and made the decision to renovate. I knew our budget was nil, but I convinced myself hard work and determination would champion the difficulties. I must have been high on wishful thinking!
I'm off to read the rest of what's been happening to you. They say bad news comes in threes. I feel for you. I'm off to read part two. I'm awarding your five stars of excellence. Keep happy thoughts or go outside and look at the flowers. . .Melissa.

    MIssy,

Speaking of flowers..I can't just look because I must move 500 patio blocks and garden after garden of flowers from my present home to the house...Thanks for reminding me! LOL Just kidding...thanks for the great thoughts and kindness. Smiles, Carol

I would soon [be] eligible
Hadn't I [did] ...[done]
They say that truth is stranger than fiction. I learned a long time ago not to say, "what next" when I think the worst has happened. There is always a "next". I am looking forward to moving on to part II of this.
