zee, I hear your rant but I don't agree. I'm sure you'll get lots of disagreement. You're entitled to your opinion as much as I am entitled to mine and I can see where you're coming from. Someday we'll know who's right and who's wrong, won't we.

Well done, pat

I saw the article in this morning's paper and it sickened me as well. Quite a rant you've written and one I so understand.

I find myself wanting to reply, to debate, to discuss. I don't want to make light of anything you've said -- it is way too close to how I feel. Still, I want to answer your last question: Am I God? My answer is a resounding 'yes' that we are all "God". I know God to be like the ocean with all power and all possibilities. I know myself to be like a cup of the same sea water. I have the same make-up, but not the power until I join with the ocean.

I believe we all get a chance to choose our life's challenges, choices, etc way before we enter this world. It's all a part of making our way back to reunite with our creator.

On the other hand, I know my view of life has to be much like a fly sitting on a Rembrant -- it doesn't make much sense to that fly from his perspective because he can't see the big picture.

I hate the evil and the pain done in this world. I also know God doesn't get the blame or the credit. We earn all of that ourselves.

Oh, Zee, I share your disgust and nausea with organized religion.

Bravo! DOUBLE BRAVO!!

My thoughts exactly. I'm so tired of people hiding behind some religious beliefs. All religious beliefs should be personal, not to forced upon others.
"God has called him to Heaven." Bull! The guy was 40 years old and had pancreatic cancer. He left behind a wife and two kids. What kind of "loving" god does that to an individual?
Why do people claim to be God-fearing? What kind of gods base their strength on fear?
"God works in mysterious ways." That's because you don't have a legimate answer.
My view of any organized religion is "I'm right and you're wrong. And I'll kill you to prove my god is stronger than yours."

Minor suggestions:
I seriously doubt he is dwelling on anyone[']s pissy-ass life
(unless God is VERY good at multi-tasking!)

I hope he cast[s] them out to be eaten by pigs.

Bravo again. You've got some monster cajones to post this, and I can respect that!

This is an excellent write, Zee. You've condensed a lot of insight into a very few words that pretty much say it all where religion is concerned. Most religious groups dispensed long ago with the supposedly inspired writings from which the religion sprang to follow their own dogma. When they talk about being set free, they've only exchanged one form of bondage for another. Very well done.

Here, here, sexy pants. I've never prayed into the ether and called it a "higher power." I don't understand why, when a family gets taken out by a drunk on the highway, those who pray get down on their knees and say, "it must be god's will." God's will? What the fuck are you talking about, God's will? I think it was Senor Guervo's will, or Comrade Schmirnoff had his hands in it, not God's!

What it is is people without hope. Towns, cities, countries, that have nothing. A population with no one to turn to, but the loudest voice and a message for sale. That's how Hitler came to power.

I hate the violence too. I used to watch the nightly news with my dad. These days I can't switch it on to watch with my son. The news is R-rated, bordering X-rated at times.

Coop.

Hi Zed,
I'm with you on this. I don't believe God wants anything to do with religion - I wouldn't if I was God.

I have said this before on FS: If there is a God then there must be a Devil. Seems to me God invented the World (more than one I guess) and this pissed the Devil off 'cos he coudn't cut it. So,like a spoilt brat, he invented religion just to piss God off. Poor old god's been trying to live this down for billions of years -- assuming there are other religious folk in the Universe: which some think is more likely than the existance of God.

Have a nice day
Keef

I hate violence, too. I hate religious fanatics who take on this wildly distorted view of what it means to follow God and to practice their religion. However, I also hate stereotyping, and for one to think that because some people who practice religion behave this way, it is time for me to shed my congregation, well, that is stereotyping. My congregation is filled with people who raise money for the local battered women's shelter and homeless shelter and who send youth groups to help rebuild Katrina-devastated areas and who gather to build a Habitat house. We are a congregation who not only bring each other casseroles when someone is sick but raise money for people in the neighborhood when their house burns down without ever asking if they have a religion. No machetes. No declaration that the synogogue in town should be burned down or the mosque. Yes, we have strength in numbers because it is lots easier to build a house when we have a ready group of people to recruit from. So, please do not call on me to leave my flock behind. And do not assume I am some sort of superior-thinking fanatic because I attend church each Sunday. Brooke
Update - devout believers feel superior - have you read all your responses?? Talk about people feeling superior, clearly all those people who've reviewed this who do NOT belong to an organized religion don't need any lessons in how to feel superior.

Ahh Brooke. You and your congregation are to be admired. You can make a difference in this world, and I am sure you do. I am suspect of all groups. Not just religious groups. I have experienced abuse in groups.

Now, I do know and realize that not all groups are destructive, or at least do not start off to be. I am willing to hope that some groups can remain objective to their cause. Your's appears to be one of those groups.

    I applaud you.

I guess my next question is this... what do you do to root out the groups who are not in the interest of your group?

I am not sure that groups take on this role.

I ask myself if I am in a group of Wasps. White, Anglo etc.

I don't do much, other than to confront them when the opportunity arises. I do not tolerate hatred. I do not tolerate bigotry. So, I tend to confront people regardless of religion, ethnicity, and social status.

Knowing you, as I feel I do, I must assume you do as well.

We are on the same page more often than not. Zee

I endorse your views completely. The devout of most of the faiths have been killing people in large numbers, invoking the name of their god. This has been going on since time immemorial, and I think will go on for many centuries to come. I advocate God to be confined to a small room in each house and not brought to the public domain. In Nigeria, it was the Muslims at the receiving end. Elsewhere the Muslims create a special class of people called Jihadis, who are promised a life of milk and honey and 76 virgins to serve them in after life if they blow themselves up and kill the infidels(nonbelievers of their god) The trouble is with the middlemen who preach this intolerance towards people of other faiths. Lastly, several people contribute large amounts for the propagation of their religion and conversion of people of other faiths. If only this money was used for humanitarian aid, this world would be a better place to live.
I commend you for writing this piece.
