Hi Jay. Beneath the light banter and raillery, I sense a very serious side to this commentary. Most every point you make is relevant, pertinent and just plain common sense . . . once you read it!! Prior, it is just of the pitfalls of being a novice in the game. No wonder my mind was a mass of overloaded beeswax as I finished reading each of your critiques!!! I have just come to appreciate the mammoth task you undertake!!! Wow!! Critters should have a rating of their own - and there would be a lonely name at the top, followed by a handful of others then a huuuuge drop to the next level!!! alf

You are so sweet, Alf. Maybe a tad hyperbolic, but hey, I'll happily reside at or near the top of your "Critter Rating" until you come to your senses. LOL, I am so gratified that you are enjoying the series and I hope you stick around for the remainder. Blessings.

Jay: I like the images that you use for this crit with drink or dream, dizzy and pukey. So slay the dragons and rescue the princess. The dragon is tied down with the font styles and so many words choices.

Keep it simple was the way in advertising promotion with the reader being in third grade. Repeat three times and the ad should catch their attention for three seconds.

So what are you giving your precious wife of many years for Mother's Day? How is your precious family? So glad that you take the time to share this information of reading three times, break it down, look for the white spaces and the wisdom.
Great information! Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

Thank you for reading and finding something to take away from my post. You are always so upbeat, so optimistic, and so giving. you are valued for your attitude. I hope your Mother's day is crammed with love and overflowing.

Jay: thank you. I try to encourage and inspire so people can fly like an eagle about the world crows.
This technique works for Bible studies too, to dive in and get the meat, the Rhema, wisdom of God.. Jeremiah 17:5-8 and 33:3. God bless! nancy

Having taught high school literature, I read The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (which has more depth than you'd think) at least four times aided with Cliff Notes and the valuable insights of esteemed critics. Each time I read these classics, I found more nuggets, so it does pay off. Same for short stories.
Scrolling down for the weight of a piece is my first step too. All narrative, no breathing spaces--give me a break!
I'm wary of large spaces too. I feel like it's first grade reading lesson again.
Five-star: ready for submission. That's a reach and we all know it, but play the encouragement game. Who wants to hurt an invalid's or abused adult's feelings? Let alone those in their ancient years.
I love the analogy with wrapping a pretty package--that in itself is excellent writing--bringing the reader back to a familiar feeling.
I quite agree on fonts other that TNR 12. Having to edit on the new FS and then switch to classic, however, does create a problem with size, I find.
A lengthy, but worthwhile read, my debonair friend.

It's not complete until I get Shari's opinion. Now I can put the chapter to bed. I jest, but you are important to me. I feel privileged to have you read my posts and I feel I grow by reading yours. Thank you, Shari!

Nothing I see that's hard to understand here, and the main drift I get is the water is deeper than it looks, and the tiniest thing can sever a reader's attention at times. Your advice to the serious reviewer is excellent.

Thank you, Red. So ... I could have knocked it off in two sentences. But then what would I have done with the other 2800 words? Thanks, pal. I'm privileged having you reading my stuff and providing brilliant stuff to read.

Well, Jay, I need a f___ing cigarette! Your foreplay was scintillating. And then the scrolling--so much scrolling and so little time. Let's not forget doo-dadery. Now, you found my weakness with that one--I LUV made-up words. Luv 'em to pieces. And font sizes? Thinly disguised, Jay, but nice try.

Really--I NEVER believe anyone that says the "editor" f'd up their format, or lack of same. As you point out, as the sage you are, don't you look at it before releasing it into the wild blue yonder??

I don't know what it is about you. But you make me write very weird reviews. Again, please don't use me as a bad example. I couldn't take it!

You write stunning crits. And there's ample evidence you read it through at some depth. I appreciate that, marietta. You're da bomb!

Great continuation of your Macro-Crittin', Jay. You are so full of it...Analogies, that is. Your cup runneth over, my friend and you are not afraid to put it out there. Good for you and as I weaved through them, I always gain some knowledge and insight into what makes you a great reviewer. 8-)

Interesting read, filled with forty-five years of acquired knowledge, via an equally interesting road, I'll bet.

Bottom line, it takes work to get it right.

Most enjoyable, and thoughtful, Jay. And very well written!

Excellent chapter. Seen no mistakes. Writing was interesting.

I was the spring of 1960 and I was hell-bent on capturing the Pulitzer, or even the Noble Prize for literature.

I hope you'll join me for the fun. It should elicit a degree of dedicated disagreement . Oh my!
