Interesting. I've dealt with some abysmals myself. Some of them win contests. Don't ask me how.
A person who critiques is a critic. Siskel and Ebert would tell you that, if they were able.

Thanks for your kind words, Emptypage. I got a kick out of your trailer, "if they were able."

Nice work, Jay. Strange, this didn't appear in my inbox. I enjoyed your experience from critiquing eleven years ago. I did not do a formal edit, but nothing glaring stood out.
Look forward to more of your musings,
Russell

The reason it didn't show in your inbox was because it's a re-post. All I did was promote it from 2 cents to where it is now. Thanks for reading.
Comment from His Grayness
Certainly, this is a very rare and remarkable epexegesis (I think is an appropriate word), laying out ones heart and mind in frank and powerful dialog that leaves no question or doubt of it's meaning. Frankly, I'm a strong supporter and admirer of this gifted writer and consider anything he says worth serious consideration. It is also very helpful to know more about the depths of the values and passions that reside within the hearts, souls, minds, values, and admirations of our brothers and sisters of Fanstory. I liked this enough for six stars but being less than frugal and wise in their disposition, I now sit here without them and only an apology and sincere 'Thank You' for a delightful read! A six isn't even expected in these postings, Vance. They've already received the ATB and that is the only benchmark I use to show that enough people enjoyed it. I'm just thrilled you found it a worthwhile beginning.

Hi Jay, I told you I'd read this soul search, so here goes. This is my take on this first piece.'
Why do you need us humble writers to 'anything star' you. You are a published Author by your bio, so why care what we humble beginners think? By, your tone you sure-as-hell don't suffer pangs of self-doubt, and by the 'All time Best' badges Fanstory readers love you, so bugger all the rest, take your piece critter critts, to your publisher and stick your finger up at all the knockers. I'm not one, too bloody old for that game. Sincerely Anne (Mabaker)

Ouch, Anne! I do thank you for your sincerity, though. I have to take that as a "no" response. Enough new folks felt they might profit by it, so it will post again. I can assume you won't be reading them, and that's fine, too. Thank you for your candid reply.

WEll, there were a few places, in particular which I really could appreciate ... and I've listed them below... the "important note" at the bottom, is that still in effect? I'm not to move on to the next chapter? or am I? hmmm?
At any rate, I smiled all the way through here. So you've been here since 2006? Do you remember me being here in 2010 as I am Cat? and then changing my name to Poetic, Just Is.? I left again in 2011... and just came back as myself ;) because, after all... I AM Cat. (Cat S. Ginn, pleased to make your acquaintance), anyway...I came back in April... and had to start all over again. LOL I had erased all my earlier work and had no rating at all. So I've started from the bottom again. ;) (classic over-achiever) lol
At any rate, here I am... Mark Fowler calls my reviews CatCrits. He has dubbed them that. Because in poetry, I take the poems piece by piece and tell the poet what I think, feel, and basically, my overall impression. ;)
I loved this. Well done... I'm liking this.
Now you can decide which category to put this in. ;)
Hey... they're your categories! LOL

There were also a small handful of writers whose work only deserved a 5, but got a 6 for any number of stupid reasons--subjective reasons. (this made me laugh)
If the writing was very good, the writer got 5 stars. Strangely, my comments in those instances could be equally as glowing. Some effervesced, even scintillated. There were also a fair number of superb submissions who only got 5s because, alas! I had already squandered my 6s. Guilt-ridden, I spewed praise over these. If praise were water they'd have been drowned, in some cases scalded by my boiling passion for their genius. (omg can I relate to this!)
Falling into the abysmal category, there is also a strange breed of writers who seem to have a cultural or literary chip on their shoulders. (oh Jay...)
One, quite to the point, commented after I reviewed his script that I reminded him of his mother! Oh my ... (great job, Oedipus! ) ;)

Thanks for reading this, Cat. But I hope I didn't confuse you. I meant the first two chapters of "Down and Out in San Antonio" are found in "How This Critter Crits". I didn't mean to have you read the entire series. Here are the two posts you can paste to your browser:

Comment from Marvin Calloway
This piece is superb. I enjoyed it. I laughed. I learned.
I like the terms, critter and critting. I agree with your approach to critting. I admire your charitable way of helping other writers. It was an enjoyable, easy read.
This is the second chapter I've read. It's going to be a valuable book.

I know I answered this once. I don't know why it's coming up again. Anyway, Marv. It's not too much to thank you twice. I hope you got the first one. Did you?

X-raying is a topic at the bottom of FS, given the aim of the site. It¡®s sad, however, that the weight of emotion, selfishness and the fear of creating enemies undermines objectivity for many, on FS. Such critters are minimal, though. Your position ensures that members stay very committed to the goals behind the site¡®s creation. I support this 100%. I came here to sharpen my prose, but ended up with poetry as well -I¡®d written poetry at the rate of 3 in a decade. Between January and April this year, however, I¡®d amassed more than 30 poems, all tucked in my portfolio.
I just wish the folks whose submissions you crit know about this post of yours.
Thank you for sharing.
Brabazon.

Comment from Donya Quijote
I really like the humorous way in which you write this exposé in the art of critiquing here at Fanstory. I also like the positive tone you employ when discussing even the worst atrocities you have encountered. I haven't encountered such works. Perhaps I am too picky about what I read and review. Perhaps it is due to the fact that I am not on Fanstory as much due to job/life commitments. Reviewing is a pain, but as a teacher I can honestly say it is far more important than the self promotion and two a day posts, as if stars and ranks have any real meaning. I perused a latter piece in this expanding treatise and thought I would check out previous installments. I am glad I did. Your experiences and opinion are important to me...

I am humbled, Donya. Thank you for your high praise. I hope the rest of the series lives up to it. confidentially, as the last crit is counted and each post drops back into the slumber of my portfolio, I marvel, "well, looks like I've fooled 'em for another week."

This is fabulous. I would bookmark the whole lot of it. But that one chapter will do to lead me to finding this again.
I can't give you more than one six. I need to preserve one for some other worthy being.
I love the 'scalded by my boiling passion'. Lol! I am so glad FanStory did encourage you to write more!

I think all of the critiques one gets on their work will help them to become a better writer. I have always taken everything to heart based on the reviews and hope that when I post my next story it will show improvement. Thanks!!!
