Life of a Monarch

Yeap, the Autumn generation lives longer but it has a long way to go to avoid the Winter.

There are many obstacles on the way to Mexico: pesticides, parasites, erratic weather, hit by cars etc,

Before leaving the Oyamel fir tree forests in Mexico the butterflies mate and on the way back they lay their eggs where ever they can find Milkweed. These butterflies then finally die.

Their off- spring once butterflies will continue to fly north to reach the north of America/south of Canada by Summer.

It's hard to believe such a tiny creature can make such an arduous journey.

I had no idea there were so few left ..

I knew about the journey the last generation in Autumn does to Mexico but I was not sure how the return trip played out.

your poem spurred me to google and satisfy my curiosity.

Hi Cecilia!

Thank you for advocating for the Monarch butterflies in this delightful poe of rhymed couplets. It would be a truly sad existence if they became extinct. We can't let that happen. Thank you for sharing.

So many species of all animals, birds, insects, etc.etc. are dwindling all over the world, I was surprised to read these migrate so far for such a fragile thing, very well written, and thank you for sharing****kahpot

    Kahpot,

Thank you for the great review. I also was amazed at how far the butterflies fly to get to their migration site. They are very fragile.

This is a very pretty poem about a sad fact. We only had one Monarch stop by last summer. We used to have lots. Their journey is amazing. I didn't realize they lived so long in their winter homes but die so quickly on their flights north.

Excellent tribute to the Monarch Butterfly. I am amazed at how far they migrate and how fast they can travel in a single day.

Hopefully their numbers don't continue to dwindle.

Much enjoyed. :)

Cecilia, believe it or not, IMHO, this held my attention and peaked my interest more than any of the other critters you did biographies on...I really
like that they have a toxin which take revenge on their predators...I've made up my mind, in my next life, guess what I want to be?

Isn't it funny, the very thing that protects and protects us against the insects, but this very thing is ridding us of the very things that is not good for the environment. This is beautifully written Cecilia, you're a good poet, well done, blessings Roy

    Roy,

Thank you for the lovely review and the compliments. I appreciate you. It is ironic about the pesticides. It's a no win vicious circle.

    Debbie,

Thank you for the wonderful review. I was looking at buying some milkweed and the seeds are expensive. I already plant the fall flowers for them, now I just need the milkweed.

Oh wow. That's so sad. They are so beautiful and I love seeing them every year. I used to go to a butterfly garden in Florida with hundreds of monarchs among others. It was so cool to sit there and have them all around. Thanks for sharing
