Wow. This is a powerful write about those death trains from the POV of one of the train drivers. Him, wanting to save the children but not being able to save them at his own cost. Very well written, and good luck in the contest.

This piece is well-designed to help readers understand how it would have felt to be caught up in horrifying process which you lack the control to stop or the courage to get out from. Young people often ask, "Why didn't you do something?" You have made clear why not. I felt the addition of the American soldier at the end needed to be expanded or deleted. Good work!

That was a sad time for the world--so many dying because of the whim of one man. I have read several stories about the Jews and the pain and horror they faced. Best of luck in the contest.

War and politics mixed with men clamoring for power and greed are timebombs waiting to destroy someone's life - there will always be those who followed orders and found they could not live with themselves and prayed they had the guts to make the right choices. We are all human...wanting to live our lives in peace.

It also allowed me to put myself in the same situation and wonder if i could make the same choices. Evil really does come to light when you put the innocence of children before it.

Unfortunately, many children were thrust into those train rides that ended in unspeakable horror.

well, you certainly made this sound real, and expressed the quandary the train conductor was in, and later, the American soldier. I know this is fiction, but I would hope the American, trained to survive, and who was probably not new to the war, knew that if he didn't kill his captives, they would kill him, and took action. But both men valued life and one valued his own more and the other was indecisive.
Good character studies.

well, you certainly made this sound real, and expressed the quandary the train conductor was in, and later, the American soldier. But both men valued life and one valued his own more and the other was indecisive.
