A well written poem full of history of the young United States. It sounds this man was a man of steel. Be proud.
An easy read with fine pace and flow.
Thanks for sharing.

Dear Nomi, how wonderful to read about your great grandfather and grandmother's lives and legacy of love. Oral history is so important and I think our younger generations are losing that. It's so important to know where we have come from. Thank you for sharing, and beautifully so. I am blessed reading it.

Just as your wonderful comments bless my efforts to introduce my ancestor to people who might never have known of his exploits. Thank you for great comments.

He sounds like a very strong man. One who worked hard all his life both during slavery and freedom. And he also sounds like a good man who cared for his family and didn't give up no matter what life threw at him.

Yes, I get that also. He was not afraid of the possible consequences of his non confirming of his status as a slave. He did not like the man who bought him so he refused to go to him.

You are fortunate to know enough about your ancestorial history to be able to write this beautiful tribute to the memory of your great grandfather. History tells us that many families that experienced slavery, even for a short period of time, were split up, and lost track of one another. However, your great grandfather sounds like a fighter who knew when to disappear into the forest, which probably saved his life.

This is a well written story in a poem about a man to be proud of.

Hi Norman,
This is a well written biography in a poem. I like the mix of end rhyme and internal rhyme. Wow, fifteen kids and all survived. It is good that the land is still in the family.
Congrats on placing third in the poem of the month contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Have a great rest of the day.
Joan

Thank you Joan. I was present at the cemetery when my father was laid to rest there and I had the opportunity to visit the graves of some other relatives who were also buried there. I spent some time visiting the graves of John Henry and his beloved Lucy.

You're welcome, Norman. It must be nice to be able to visit a family plot. All my family are buried in different places.

This piece speaks to the life of a man who lived through a very difficult time in history. It shows the reader that he was strong and tough enough to face the world and keep pushing forward and left a wonderful legacy behind.

Yes, thank you for your comments. As I learn much more about him I am learning that there are traits that I think I must have inherited from him and that makes me extremely happy.

What a great way to tell the story of your great grandfather. Personally, because of your rich history, it would be great if you wrote a novel about your family. Thank you for sharing, NOMI338.

I would love to do that, I am just not sure I have enough material to do a proper job of it. You see I was separated from that side of my family until I reached the age of 28 years of age. That is the age I was when I met my grandmother for the first time. Since that time I have been playing catch up.

"I pray, some of that gift has rubbed off on me" I want to let you know that the gift of poetry did rub off on you. I am curious if you've searched and discovered which port your ancestors came to the US through. Thank you for sharing your inherited talent with us.

No I have not done much research. Most of what I know about my paternal ancestors was shared with me through my grandmother and my aunts. My maternal grandfather came to the US from the US virgin Island of St. Thomas. He died in San Diego at the age of 102 years. Like my paternal great grand father, I never met or spoke with either one.
