Excellent questions of "why" we survive and others are not so fortunate. Survivor's guilt must lead to those questions.
Very well done.
Blessings

"Spared by
a relentless sun,
I am allowed
to rise."
"to endure this heat
and howling wind
to not merely survive-
but to bloom"
........Beatiful.....
Your free verse lows so smoothly I thought it was rhymed.
Well done. Excellent message about survivor's guilt.

Beautiful and edgy (but in a good way). You tackled a difficult subject with brevity and clarity. The images are strong and relevant, making your point perfectly.

I think we learn more in the valley of despair, than on the mountain of joy, the only value the past has is being a teacher of wisdom, not to venture down pathways of batten wastelands, beautifully written free verse Jessica, blessings Roy

Beautiful free verse! I have known people who have suffered a lot during their lives and they have grown strong and resilient despite all the hardships. Hope this does well in the contest!

"Why" 'Cause I bloody want to, that's why!
"I've asked
for no such mercy" It can be taken away, if you're not happy with it.
Very nice free verse personifying a desert plant's suspicion of why it's been allowed to survive in such harsh conditions. An (unanswerable?) question for nature/God.
Good luck in the contest!

Comment from Debbie D'Arcy
A poignant verse, Jess, reflecting on the way nature will always push its way through the most barren ground, battling the odds whilst also begging the question 'why?' In the same way, we also wonder why, when challenged by life events, we retain our will to survive, stirring up feelings of guilt that so often accompany the loss of a loved one.
Beautifully expressed, Jess, in your flowing free verse. Take care Debbie xo
