This world today there are so many people that have abused their bodies and not been diligent about taking care of them and then they expect the doctors to come up with a pill or a shot or something to help them repair the damage. I see people when I go into the doctors office who are bringing in Plastic bags full of medication that they take. I can't even imagine taking as many medication's as I see these people having in their bag. I take two prescribe medication a day I take lisinopril in a very small dosage for my blood pressure and I also use eye drops in my eyes other than that nothing else is prescribed for me. On occasion when I have a strength, extreme pain, they will give me some morphine and I , do not take it and I do not allow myself to ever become addicted to so I have a morphine tablet usually around someplace that I can take times of extreme pain. I'm sure that museum that you're talking about in this must be a very distressing place to see. Patricia .

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. Yes, the first step is for people to make wise lifestyle choices, and look after their bodies. Some diseases are unpreventable of course. The museum started as a teaching area about diseases for medical students.

I love the idea of this! Sometimes you have to push people's faces in their bad habits to get them to understand what it can do to them. When I was a young teen, kids sent to the dean's office for smoking in the bathroom were made to smoke a bunch of cigarettes one after the other until they got sick. Of course, that would never happen these days, but I understand that it worked - they no longer wanted to smoke a cigarette.

Thanks for bringing this weird museum to our attention.

Ugh! Fear (or being made sick) shouldn't need to be the driving force, but in some cases it can be an effective deterrent, and a motivator to make good lifestyle choices. Thanks so much for a great review. I thought you would enjoy this one, as you are into fitness. The museum started as a teaching and learning space about diseases for medical students, and grew from there. Thanks so much for reviewing.

I would be very interested in going to this place for sure. Seeing as how I have an autoimmune disorder and other health issues I would be very curious to see what this place has to offer. Sounds interesting.

Thank you Nicole. It would be interesting. I haven't been there, as it's not close to me. It started as a teaching space for medical school students, and developed from there. I appeciate your review.

oh good grief! i guess i can understand their logic in having such a place but i would personally never make it past the front door without some serious issues. I tend to pass out during mere discussions of blood (yes, yes, I realize I write horror stories, but that is an issue for another time and possibly a therapist). I do have a penchant for the macabre but the gross gets to me everytime lol Thanks for sharing. Very interesting.

Lol. This place is definitely not for you! If you visit Australia, you will find plenty of beautiful and interesting places to explore elsewhere. Thanks so much for reading and reviewing. Much appreciated.

Dear Wendy

Kudos to you for visiting this museum twice. Once in reality and a second time because you relived your experience by writing this account.

I must respectfully disagree with the premise on which it was founded. A premise of fear which I see in the majority of TV ads pushing medical procedures and new drugs in the US.

I most definitely follow Aesop in accentuating the positive to bring about desired change.

However to each his own. There may well be persons whose lives will be changed for the better due to the exposure offered by the Museum. If so it is serving a noble purpose.

Blessings, Julia

Thanks so much for your thoughtful review. To be honest, I have never been there, I just researched it as a response to Helen's prompt to write about weird museums. It actually didn't begin as a museum, nor with the present goal. It was a collection of specimens for medical students to study and research diseases and their effects, and it grew from there. I agree with you re the basis for change focussing on positive outcomes rather than being based on fear. But sometimes fear is the only driver of change for lifestyle choices. They are encouraging decisions to NOT smoke, overindulge in the wrong foods etc, rather than advocating taking drugs or accepting medical procedures from fear, so I think it's a bit different. I think over here we are not harrassed by such advertising to anywhere near the same degree as in the US. It's minimal here, generally about children's Panadol or cough lozenges etc. I appreciate your thoughts, and value your review - thank you.

Thank you for sharing this club entry with us. I am not wanting to visit it anytime soon. I do want to visit Australia though. I enjoyed reading and this is a good write.

Thanks so much Barbara. I am sure Australia has enough scenic and beautiful spots to more than fill your itinerary, without this particular museum. Thanks so much for reviewing.

I'm so glad you didn't have an image of any of the exhibits to complement your story! Your selection, instead, of people's comments said so much more. What a place to visit! But, having said that, I'd be up for it. I'm always fascinated by the human body and disease although I'm the world's worse nurse because I'm rather prone to fainting! So well done for, not only completing your visit, Wendy, but also writing a fascinating, if disturbing, account. You definitely need to be writing for the Tourist Board. Take care Debbie

Thanks so much for this super review. I'm a bit squeamish but it might be a fascinating experience. I'll be honest - I haven't been there, I researched it as a response to Helen's prompt to talk about weird mueums! I was sure Australia would have some weird ones, and yes, I found this one. My writing about it might turn people off. Maybe people who make poor lifestyle choices should be compelled to pay a visit as part of their medical treatment! There's a thought.

You did an excellent job of describing "Australia's Most Disturbing Museums." I would put it at the top of places I'd never want to visit. I do find it disturbing that "extinct" diseases are there and might be stolen and spread again by evil people.

You're right - and I haven't visited it either! It started out as a learning experience for medical school students. I think security there would be tight - and it's not very well known. I appreciate your thoughtful review - thank you so much.

OMG!! This is weird and funny and also, inexplicably, tantalizing. I mean, who doesn't love to be sort of grossed out occasionally? PT Barnum certainly got that concept, did he not?

I would work on this sentence, Wendy, as it falls a bit into the Department of Redundancy Department:

The museum has recently reopened after a few years of closure, and it has added...

Maybe something like: After a brief hiatus, the museum recently reopened, and it has...

I thoroughly enjoyed this, Wendy! Very fun read. I'd love to meet that museum director. He reminds me of the guy who came to rid our new house of termites - SOO enthusiastic and knowledgeable about such a creepy, awful subject! But, hey, this is what makes the world interesting!!

xoxo

Thanks so much for your thoughtful review. Yes, that sentence is in great need of change - I'll fix it. The museum started out as a learning experience for medical school students and developed from there, but I think you are right about the director. Probably can talk for hours about each exhibit! Thanks again.

I always feel weird mentioning "writing snags" to superior writers like yourself. I liken it to me looking at one of Picasso's pieces and saying, "Hey, um, Pablo, don't you think that could use an extra little stroke or two of yellow there?" What I notice, though, is that the excellent writers are the ones who appreciate that kind of feedback, whether they take it or not, so I forge ahead. xoxo

EXACTLY!!!!! That why it slays me when some members get all up in arms and oh-so indignant if suggestions are made or spags are noticed. They're the ones who will never improve.xo

The first paragraph, and "very confronting museum," draw interest and make the reader want to read on to see what the posting is all about.

Statically wonder what effects, if any, the "grossed out" exhibits have on museum visitors in regards to wanting to better look after their bodies?

The various exhibits discussed would be interesting to observe, if nothing more.

Good mantra to describe the museum "Australia's Most Disturbing Museum."

Thanks so much for reviewing Brett. No idea re the stats for its effectiveness. I think it started out as simply being a learning environment for medical school students, and was initially only accessible to them. Then they decided to see if the public was interested. It's not very widely known.
